I've run these for a good few years - being able to adjust gear indexing on the go is of massive benefit. That and knowing how much battery you have when you jump on the bike. And what gear (suffer level) you're in.

You can do that with the normal Junction A though, you don't need a display.

Shimano nerds, I need some advice. It is possible to bodge an old Di2 derailleur (the black/silver 11 s) to accept a 34t cassette? Was thinking maybe with a longer cage from some other donor derailleur, if something compatible exists?

Depends, which one? As far as I know there's also a parallelogram geometry difference, not just cage length for most models.

I dont think a short cage 6870 SS would ever clear 34t without a hanger extention of some sort, but the GS version can officially do 32t so should be fine. 8050-SS can do 30t according to Shimano, that might be ok on 34t with B-screw maxed out.

My 6870 short cage just about does it on a 1x setup, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re not really using the 34 (which I rarely do). Noisy and probably not an ideal setup. I haven’t gotten around to adding the wolftooth on yet but I tried it with another derailleur and it did make the alignment trickier.

You could swap the jockey wheel cage for a longer one or use a Wolf Tooth Roadlink.
My partner's bike was, for a while, running a 42T using an older style 11s Di2 RD with a Wolf Tooth. It's not the best for off-road so I eventually bought her a clutched 11s RD instead which then didn't need the Wolf Tooth.

It depends on the cage - think some of them like Gabaruk will adjust position of top wheel somewhat and/or use different sized wheels for this reason. Mostly the longer cage is for increasing the 'range' of the RD, which happens when you add a bigger cassette and then the chain ends up too slack when in the smaller cogs.

Easiest option is deffo Wolf Tooth though.

I know it's mechanical but; the swap I did on my XTR for my mountain bike to Garbaruk rewarded me with a fantastic shifting experience. 10/10 would swap again.

What was the reason? Run a bigger cassette? I look at them on and off every year it seems but they've never offered enough for me to bit the bullet. I think they got me an extra tooth at the back or something but they were spendy and I ended up just going lower on the cranks anyway. 30 and even 28T now on the MTBs and 46/30 on the grav gravs

I actually really like mechanical XT/XTR. Although desperately trying to jump half the cassette hitting the bottom of an incline during XC races always brought me to a standstill in a cacophony of gear crunching….
Probably user error tbh.

I don't mind it for the most part but I've not been able to set it up where I don't get terrible right thumb pain after a long ride. I borrowed a friend's AXS and I think that makes sense for an upgrade, especially since my frame isn't Di2 compatible. It also means if I stick aerobars on for TD or something similar I can use the extra buttons pretty easily. You just have to carry 100 spare batteries. Their charger is Micro USB rather than USB-C which kinda sucks too but better that than a thumb that doesn't work after a day.
