  • Pompetamine rat messenger fixed project! Got the frame for next to nothing as the seat post was stuck, but I got it out with a load of patience and WD40. Made some wheels with wide Ryde rims and a Surly fixed/disc rear hub, scraped the parts bin for cranks, saddle etc. and just did a test ride. The ride is very nice, but:

Not happy with having to resort to double adapters to fit modern-ish brake calipers. These make it nigh impossible to get rid of brake rub. Also it means I have to use 180mm discs which is a bit overkill. Wondering whether I should put on some old IS mount calipers to get rid of the 2 adapters per caliper. Will these work with the 10sp Tiagra levers?

The bars, bargainous as well but not yet very happy with these either. I think they're too wide and not long enough in the drops (meaning I'd like the ends of the bars longer so there's the option of just resting your hands on a horizontal bit of tube). Any suggestions for narrower bars with medium flare and 'long ends'?

Also: was it a standard feature that the right rear dropout was bolted onto the rear seat stay so as to facilitate fitting a belt-drive? Or was this some prototype or DIY-hack?

And it needs mudguards, preferably SKS long board (the only ones with decent front guard length + mud flap so as to keep the toes dry(ish)) but they seem to have ended production :-/

  • I think the belt drive option was a standard feature at one point. On-one were selling a complete bike with a belt drive and Nexus hub for a while, if I recall correctly.
