Similar situation- which I first became aware of when all non-British staff were asked to provide a copy of their passport.
Remember the amount of money I used to take to the post office? That was from the bar on Regent Street Turns out that my peer at Henrietta Place had bundled up her banking and headed out to the post office- and never returned. The cleaner called another cleaner at a different bar to sound the alarm and an investigation was started.
The lady in question was Polish, was renting a room in a shared house under a different name (also not her own) and had popped back on the day she vanished from the bar, grabbed her passport and a bag and headed for (per her housemate) the airport.
I don’t know how far £45,000 went in Poland in the mid 2,000’s, but clearly far enough for her to be worth it.
