  • I'm probably going to be buying a bike for mainly commuting in the next few months. Maybe 40 miles each way of A road and motorway.
I'm thinking either adventure style so I can be upright and have good visibility over urban traffic and get good wind protection with a high screen or sport touring for similar wind breaking properties. I'm only going to spend 3-4k so dreams of a Tenere 700 will have to wait.
Looking at maybe a BMW f800gs or the f800st/f800gt, Tiger 800. Also VFR800, that type thing or something between the two like a Tracer 700. I'm thinking 7-800cc, 2010 or newer. Not looking for anything too exciting, just dependable and comfortable.
I'll also ride it 200mi each way from time to time to visit my parents.
Anything I should add to the shortlist?

  • Look at what price point the road fund licence goes up and then decide how much you are going to go beyond the speed limit. Then look at 600 and below.

  • This is my logic with the CBR600. Age aside, 600 is more than enough. 100-110hp is still more than some cars on the road, power:weight massive vs most cars. So, easy to overtake, easy to get in and out of trouble.

Very easy to throw about in traffic, very easy to get points on the license. Easy to sit under the little wind protection at legal speeds, and mostly comfortable while doing it.

Any engine bigger is just not worth it to me. 600’s will do distance without crying.
