  • Had a look at yesterday's file in Connect and it looks right to me. I'll see what the other half's look like.

Is Strava showing same elevation as Connect?

  • The head unit is giving garbage, so it was giving me negative climbing going up the Crong. Hence connect and strava have the same garbage.

It has to be my head unit. And my club mates at the same time.

  • My clubmate and me both have 530s. Anyone got a 530 and is it fucked?

  • Yeah, just checked her ride in Connect and the starting elevation is the same and the top of the climb elevation is within 1m.

  • Thanks. I'll ping Garmin and see if they want to give me a new one!

  • They seem to want to. Maybe it's a known problem.

I wish they would give me an 840...

  • Did you leave from the same place?

The fact both head units reported the same junk sounds like you, say, left from a warm building and went and found yourselves a low pressure system or something and so both units reported the same thing.

Google your model - could be an issue with that unit but I don't know about it.

  • I want a 1040 Solar. Pray for me.

  • No, left from our own houses and met on the road.

  • Yes there seems to be some stuff, but it's hard to make sense of it without reading dozens of forum posts. Probably a known issue as they immediately offered a replacement when I put my serial no in.

  • That's a quick response from them. Interesting. I'd still say the issue is internal barometric sensor related.

  • It was an instant decision, no time for human input, just computer says yes! Basically a valid serial number for an 830 or 530 seems to get it automatically. My mate got offered a replacement too.

So the 840 is £400 now. I could sell the replacement 530 but maybe for £150 or so as new ones are only £195. I still can't really justify the upgrade, £250 to be able to easily zoom in and out.

  • No zoom is better. Touch screen sucks.

  • I only want touch screen for zoom. With the 840 you can use buttons for everything else I think, basically it's a 530 with touch screen, it's got all the buttons.

However I might give Stages / Giant Dash another go. I actually really liked their unit. Not as slick as Garmin but the screen was really good.

  • Just bought a Giant Dash M200. Found one going for half price so, £120.
I expect it's because they still have loads of issues and I'll regret it, but they've released new firmware and some reviews are OK.
I prefer it to Garmin if it works!

  • Still has all the downsides in the rain no?

  • Don’t ride in the rain, problem solved!

  • I juse enable screen lock on Garmins when it's raining.

  • Exactly this. The touch screens on the newer ones are pretty good and it's so easy to lock. I hated the 530 navigation.

  • Still has all the downsides in the rain no?

I'm not going to get one at current pricing so I won't find out! But reports are that they are better.

The Dash isn't touchscreen and it isn't designed to be so it is easier to use than 530. Mainly the display is more pleasant than Garmin, it makes me feel happier to look at it!

Now firing up an old 705 to see if it will still work for audax this weekend

  • Is anyone in the market for a Garmin? I'm selling my Garmin Edge 520 Plus. The battery life isn't amazing, will probably do 6ish hours if the screen isn't too bright.
I think I bought it for £120 off here about a year ago and it's in the same condition as it was them so would maybe want about £100 for it?

  • I've had the same issue with climbs reading negative. Just gone to the Garmin site to look at returning it but they're asking for £111. Did they charge you for the replacement?

  • No, I just put my serial number in and it said free replacement.

I've got my new one now. It's a refurbished version of the same.

    Did you go here?

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/exchange/?exchangeType=P&exchangeId=201397

  • I discovered during the process that I can get zoom by holding down the top left button. So I now have zero need to upgrade to the 840.
