I'd have thought that too, but they're set in there very neatly. And they went in about two weeks after the wall went up.

Yikes. They're ugly!

Zipline to the shed has been suggested by family.

Did they grind the faces of all those bricks?
-
• #9782
Yeah, this is unavoidable when getting pebbledash removed. The cement render takes chunks of brick off with it, causing it all to look rough as dogs’ arses as per my previous snap. It’s then ground back a bit until even, then tinted, and finally pointed.
There’s no way around grinding the bricks back, unless you fully replace all the facing bricks. The original fired face gets ripped off with the render anyway…

Should you wash bananas before or after peeling them?
-
• #9784
Depends if you can see them

Solution containing earth pigments and soot.

I read the last few posts as you should wash bananas in a solution of earth pigments and soot before eating them.

"Earth pigments" sounds like an expensive way of saying "mud and dust"

They look like the things you get at the end of a row of ridge tiles on a sloped ridge

Hip iron is the name, or so google tells me
-

"to hold the eaves hip tile in place while the fixing mortar was drying. Hip irons are also useful as a safety feature to prevent hip tiles from slipping when the fixing mortar cracks or fails."
Was it in your architect's technical plan? Those look like heavy blocks that I wouldn't want falling off if/when the mortar fails so it could have even been a building control thing.

Hip iron is like a Langster circa 2007?

The whole thing will lighten up a touch when dry. Still can’t believe the rancid crust is gone…

Those don’t look like Velfac windows at the front?

The windows at the front are gross, and fucked, but are staying until we can afford to delete them.
The rear is Velfac all the way down.
-
• #9797
Oh thank god. Thought they were freshly fitted.
-
• #9798
Ha! Wish we could afford to replace them now, would save so much cash and aggro down the line.
On a related tip: what's the best product to use for stripping paint off stonework? Looking to strip all the cills, lintels and capitals, then coat with masonry sealer and leave 'raw'.

I’ve done it by painting it badly then leaving for 5 years for the harsh weather to blow it all off. There may be a quicker way.

Some kind of media blasting would be the most effective I think. Probably not the cheapest option but I think can be done pretty quickly.
I'd hazard they're temporary while the mortar sets.
