  • My battery shat its pants a couple of years back, I paid for a new battery but Apple swapped out everything else minus the guts for no extra charge. Case, keyboard and screen, a pleasant surprise

  • Hmmm. Yes. Probably because I'm weird and I use neither iCloud nor Dropbox.

Maybe I should compare costs vs. using iCloud etc.

  • I'm really liking the macbook air which is pretty similar to performance of mbp

  • All M-series MacBooks have the SSD chips soldered to the motherboard, so that's not happening.

(Your Intel Mac likely does too unless it's pre-Touchbar)

You can get special drives that sit flush in the SD card slot if you just want some extra storage.

  • Airs are passively-cooled and do throttle noticeably if you're doing any work which requires sustained load though, so be mindful if your workload involves stuff like rendering AfterEffects projects etc.

  • I just sandisk SSD’s for working off, I also feel you need min 500gb as programs can’t start to take everything up

  • yep good point all! Gonna just keep using it. Esp as under butterfly keyboard program Apple replaced the whole motherboard and keyboard last year.

  • work gave me a 14" M3 MBP today, its nice but I'd want to avoid spending my own money for that sort of stuff.

  • How do you get digital audio out from the lightning port of an iPhone to an external DAC with a USB-C port? I’ve tried Apple’s Lightning to USB-Cable with Apple’s USB-A to USB-C dongle with no luck. I’ve also tried a third party Lightning to USB-C cable, also with no luck.

Apple’s camera connection dongle and a USB-A to C cable?

  • Do FiiO do a cable?

  • Yeah, they do, and it's a Fiio Q11 DAC/Headphone amp I'm using. I think what I need is (and it's what the Fiio cable is advertised as) an OTG cable. I've ordered a generic one off Amazon, will see if that does the trick.

  • Clearing out some bits that thought I’d offer up here before putting them in the regular for sale thread. All genuine Apple.

As far as I know, everything functions. Some stuff has been sitting in boxes for a while though and I don’t have the relevant bits to test. All prices includes UK postage, PayPal F&F please or cover the fees.

    1. 61w USBC power adapter - works - tested this morning - £30
    2. Lightning Digital AV adapter - not tested - £25
    3. Thunderbolt to FW800 - not tested - £50 (going rate on eBay is like £100-£120!)
    4. Lightning to 3.5mm adapter - not tested - £5
    5. Lightning to USBC - 1 metre - new - £10
    6. Lightning to USBC - 1 metre - new - £10

Send me a DM if you are interested, if someone wants the whole lot then call it £100.

  • Forks sake, the third party lightning-USB A OTG cable + Fiio supplied USB A - USB C combo doesn't work either to get digital audio out of my iPhone, also.

Apple y u make it so hard to get digital audio out? With my Mac I had to end up installing a third-party app (Lossless Switcher) to get hi-res out.

Edit - Come back to it, and it now does work with my iPhone, but doesn't want to do hi-res (it's turned on in Music settings)

  • Out of curiosity - why do you want digital signal? From what I've read the default lightning - 3.5mm is properly good.

The almighty Ken Rockwell has a good writeup: https://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/lightning-adapter-audio-quality.htm

  • It’s ok especially for lossy spotify listening with a pair of bose noise cancelling, I use an audioquest dragonfly red for better headphones both with the phone and at the computer.

  • I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD560S. The Apple dongle can just about drive them by maxing out the volume. Brought a dac/headphone amp to give a bit more headroom.

I use the Apple dongle on IEMs and lower-impedance headphones (it drives Grado's fine).

  • Aha. Forgot about that side of things. What about AirPlay to headphone amp, is that a thing?

  • My MBA just slid off the sofa and hit the floor - bent the screen hinges slightly and deformed the case. Works fine, but super annoying. Can this be fixed or is it a case of live with it until I (get a new job and can afford to) replace it?

  • I wouldn't chance it trying to bend things back. Doubt you'd get it back to as it was anyway. I'd say leave as is

  • I hope everyone said Air. No need for a Pro.

  • Yeah - its great and nippier than the M2 mbp i had

  • Just have to use it, as a screen and everything to fix it i bet will be fortune going on any other repairs ive had done over the years. In a couple weeks you'll get use to it and still be using it in 5 years.

  • Target acquired. 10% off sale at big box electrical store means I'm picking up a 14" MBP tomorrow. The saving pays for AppleCare+, a new case and maybe a carton of AF piss. M3 Pro, 12-Core CPU, 18-Core GPU, 18GB Memory, 1TB SSD.

But do I need moar power?

  • But do I need moar power?

    Always

  • M3 Pro, 12-Core CPU, 18-Core GPU, 18GB Memory, 1TB SSD.

this is what I have from work .. the stuff I use it for I feel zero diff in M1 mac mini that I have and this beast

But do I need moar power?

    lol no
