  • Beeswax after that or a clear varnish? Think I will give it a go

  • the meths is mostly for good clean but with a bit of luck it will soften break down and remove the existing finish - what to do next is a bit mind boggling in options. I do like birwax furniture polish it's the easiest to reverse (white spirit) and re apply but water will stain through. Could just use tung oil or tung oil topped with the furniture wax. The other useful product is osmo wood wax or polyx oil - these are an all in one finish.. with all of them the quantity need is small and they can all achieve a glassy varnish like finish. But varnish I would avoid - I think that timber will be great with just the briwax (apply it leave to soak in a little and buff up gently)

  • He's alright.. I'll confess I've never got round to applying both finishes (oil then wax) mostly from can't be arsed/ that'll do, some things have just wax others just oil

  • ^^ they never say what the stripper is? if anyone knows?

  • can someone please take this absolute steal of a bargain before i take a day off work, do an eight-hour round trip, spend money i don’t really have, try to fit it in the back of an old skoda fabia, to take it home to a house that probably won’t have room for it for another 15 years when the kids (hopefully) move out.

    thank you.

    p.s. does it come apart?

  • I messaged and asked this question. They didn't say which they are using in the video, but of the modern ones they had tried this was the best

  • Haha thanks. Gutted to be selling but just doesn’t work as a playroom sofa for a toddler!

Sorry I should have updated - @TTM has bought it and arriving tomorrow. Which is lucky as the replacement sofa is also coming tomorrow

  • Am after a desk chair that has arms, is adjustable (height), not on wheels, and doesn’t look like an office chair. Will live in my bedroom.

Quite like this but its not adjustable.

    Any recommendations?

  • 2nd hand eames alu chair?

  • Thanks. Nice but they don’t seem to be height adjustable. I acknowledge my criteria (arms/adjustable/no wheels) is pretty specific….

  • Mine is. Has wheels though.

  • If you don't want wheels look for a secretary's, telephonists or meeting room version of one of the lines where they equipped the entire office - e.g. Eames Soft Pad.

  • Wasn't sure whether to post here or in the gardening thread, but thought I'd share in case any one is after some budget garden seating.

We picked up a Koble Grey Malmo Garden Lounge 4 Piece Sofa Set for £400 +£60 curbside delivery.

Put the arms chairs up over lunch. It's obviously 2nds with a few marks here and there, but nothing serious. Less exposed bolt heads than I was worried about, which is good. One dodgy thread which pressed the metal on the otherside out. Which is annoying, so I'm measuring the thread depths first now.

Overall I'd say £7-800 would be about fair vs whatever they say the rrp is. But for £460 it seems like vgvfm especially if you want something robust with kids.

  • Saw their plastic collection reel on the 'gram. They're crazy spendy but I love the idea.

  • I somehow volunteered to do this - oil a bench - the previous coats had been really badly applied, and thus created patina so I wasn't after a refinish to new just bring it up to a cared for level, it's not the oil that's done the work more three hours with wire wool and two coats of fast dry tung oil. I'm sure there are other methods and products - but I'm kinda chuffed

  • I just stumbled across this
    https://youtu.be/L90Tt-lc7GI?feature=shared

50/50 mix pure tung and boiled linseed+ beeswax - I can't imagine it fairing well for exterior stuff but guess it's designed to dry well

  • Not sure if this is better here or DIY but has anyone had a go at making some shelves like this?

    https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/792305239/100-oak-wood-bike-hanger-bike-shelf-bike?

I picked up some old oak kitchen worktops which I think are decent for the wood but that's as far as I've got

  • They were all about smashing up concrete last time I looked - it's worth sticking an image in the thread and see what gets said.. I bagged an oak worktop cutout 38x98cm - screwed some cheap found IKEA legs to it and it became the most useful table I had (so much so that i haven't seen it in four years as its working as my partners desk). I'd say oak is a bugger to work with, more patients faster blunting of tools, and if one joint is slightly out harder to correct - also guessing it's starting point is really quiet thick so a simpler design with classy hooks may = less work

  • I’ve an until this last, set of drawers, who have now closed :-(
Who can I look to that don’t use the flat pack style of runner for drawers in something ply/ birch/ light wood coloured?

  • I’m not in the market but this seems like a good deal

    https://www.scp.co.uk/products/ex-display-series-7-chair-black-chrome

  • Amazing deal. We got we display white ones ten years ago second hand for about the same price.

  • yeah occasionally scp just have great deals - likely these are fairly well used but still not sure you could get repro ones for that price!

  • I've a new (second-hand yep that's right) chair on the way , picking up Saturday, somehow posting about it here is easier than telling the ... ¡captain!
