  • M6's aren't going for that much about 2 grand ish. I sold one about 6 months ago!

Should sell my other one as it never gets used but cant bring myself too.

  • Yeah, the Lightroom/ACR “enhance” thing is what I’ve been using lately and it does make iso a bit of a non issue.

*then adds grain back in post

  • Oh totally. Post grain on NR is a solid move. The topaz program also has a “preserve details” slider which I think is a nice touch.

  • Bit random. I have an old point and shoot Sony Cyber-shot that I wanted to give my 5yo as they like taking photos and their toy digital camera is shit and their tablet is hard to take stable images. Likewise my old gopro has limitations for a kid.

However, I've remembered that the autofocus and speed on my Sony isn't great and harder to get a nice photo than my proper old school gen2 Cyber-shot was.

Does anyone have some off the top of their head suggestions for super cheap off Ebay / similar point n shoot cameras? Stability, speed and autofocus being the key. But aiming to spend as close to zero as possible.

    Cheers.

  • What would amey buy?

  • An iPhone 14 Pro Max?

  • ^^ Congrats, you've won this week's star prize.

  • Does amey actually buy anything?

I thought it was all free promos so he could AstroTurf.

That's why everything is turned over so quickly.

  • I realise it's quite a big ask, as the question is effectively asking people to recall specs from 2014-2020 cameras that they probably weren't interested in anyway, yet haven't the become random cult cameras because John Watson took one on holiday once.

  • 15 pro max

  • Maybe those tough/waterproof compacts are a good shout for a kid?

There’s a few LUMIX ones that go back a few years and are plenty snappy enough at focusing etc. just avoid anything with WiFi/gps as they get spendy

  • Cheers. LUMIX is a good shout.

  • A guy I did LEJOG 10 years ago with had one of those OM TOUGH cameras, it took reasonable photos for the type of camera and was pretty bombproof

  • Ricoh make some waterproof/shockproof/dustproof cameras.

  • Cheers.

I'm was thinking of something more in the £14 price range.

  • Lumix DMC lx 2 or another number wasn't that bad. Also does 16:9, so almost an iPhone.

  • I’m keen to say goodbye to my phone, and am after a small camera to take with me instead. I’ve got a D700 with a 28-300 3.5-5.6G lens which is obviously far too big for everyday carrying, and may either sell it to fund a new camera or exchange.

I’d like better ergonomics than is available on the tiniest cameras, and am open to smaller interchangeable lens cameras. Would like good landscape capabilities and good dynamic range. I’ve been out of the camera game for a few years. What would you recommend for the sort of money I could get for my current setup?

  • I had the same dilemma end of last year, wanted to go hand-luggage only for some trips and that meant no dslr sized camera. Also have been frustrated at the lack of quality of an (older) iPhone, fine for family WhatsApp group but that’s about it!

I ended up with a second hand Fuji XT-3 and a prime 23(?)mm pancake lens. Found it perfect for almost all scenarios, doesn’t quite fit in a jacket pocket (but as a smaller than average sized person, maybe just small pockets!) but perfect for adding to a bag. About the same size as a 500ml bottle of water I found in terms of space.

Obvs second hand prices vary, I paid c. £500 I think with a case and a few extras as well

  • Thanks so much for your feedback. Sounds like exactly the sort of thing I need… I like the look of the manual controls and the size too. Will have a hunt around. Anyone here selling a similar setup?

  • I had the same scenario and went for a Fuji XT20. Was a couple of years ago now so you'd want to look for a newer one maybe XT30 or something.
Quite a bit smaller than the XT3 and will squeeze in a pocket with the pancake lens

  • could sell you XT-2 cheap?

  • Ooh possibly! Can you dm me with details?

  • Anyone recommend a camera sling, that is also a bum bag? Doesn't need to be big, just a few litres. Want something I can use as a sling, and a bumbag when riding.

Can find slings, and bum bags, but not a lightly padded camera one...

  • What about a bag you like and get an insert? Plenty of options over on Amazon for lightly padded rucksack inserts (I’ve got some smallrig suff which is ok), else I think Crumpler, ortlieb and possibly peak design do an insert(s) in various sizes that’ll fit a range of cameras.
