I got reasons about why the materials are bad from smyth!

Very few UK pallets have been treated with methyl bromide,
which will be indicated on the corner blocks as 'MB'.

I haven't collected any pallets post-Brexit.
The best ones used to be from mediterranean Oak species from places importing tiles from Turkey.

Some are also heat treated, rather than chemically.

However, they are rough as fuck. You'll have to sand carefully to avoid snagging and creating and edge you need to sand again. Then you'll need a thick layer of varnish to give a finish appropriate for little hands.

That said there are sometimes pallets that are better quality. I got these mini ones from Halfords which are definitely not your average ones.

@Chalfie if you want low cost timber have a rummage in Solo Wood Recycling in Croydon. It's close to Ikea. They always have loads of the 'ribs' from bigger pallets, and sometimes ply in offcut strips. It's a nice place to support.

Once you put a duvet on it and stuff shit underneath you'll barely notice any rough spots.

The main thing is finding a way to mark the visible faces (prob on the bottom of the feet), so you can focus on getting a really nice finish on those.
