They used to…there’s the obvious dambusters dog. Loads of people would call their dog “blackie”, there was a guy on our estate who called his black labs “Shaka” and “Zulu”.
Culturally and legally it’s frowned upon these days.
I’m sure to name your dog with an Irish surname isn’t usually meant with malice, but it’s not a good look. Using the surname gives a master and servant formality.
