  • Not there it doesn't. That just means that any (powered up) phone that connects to a cell tower will share some very basic info about the phone and SIM to be able to use the tower, they have to know who they're talking to. If police know the identifiers of the phone they can see what towers it was connected to and when and get a location, more towers nearby the more accurate it'll be.
    I've always assumed that's how rough locations work for no GPS stuff like weather apps, with an occasional GPS check for stuff like Google timelines.
