  • Hi - I’ve got bubbling on my aluminium road bike (kinesis aithien 2016).

Is this a structural problem or rather just cosmetics? Or.. can’t tell from these photos. Sorry for dirt.

    Thank you!

  • Bubbling like that is usually a sign of underlying corrosion, typically caused by road salt getting under the paint through chips and scratches. I'd say it's time to start shopping for a new bike, that one has had a good innings as it looks like it's been rode hard and put up wet for eight years.

  • In my experience, just ride around for a bit on them, they'll fall off and you'll need to find €30 for a replacement crank retaining bolt.

  • Thanks for the response. Yes, i've loved it - ridden it mostly all year round for those years.

Perhaps it can be a turbo bike for now.

  • turbo bike

Yeah, that should finish it off. Eventually...

  • Corroded and seized stem, seized headset bearings, even spacers!

Even worse, the amount of corssosion on the bars when you take off the old bar tape! Nasty!

  • seized headset bearings

I've killed a few on the rollerfort, but the Cane Creek 40 that's in there now seems to be doing OK

  • Thanks @PhilDAS. That crank is quite old, you still get spares? The bb needs replacing or not replacing bbs wore the axle and new crank required, there's play.

  • Reminds me of reading Graeme Obree's book when he talked about the old BMX tubing (I think) he used to build Old Faithful. It had been kept on the floor by the outside toilet, so was referred to as "pish-rust tubing".

  • I have an IceToolz Campag bearing puller (which is fine for using once a year, FWIW). I don't have it committed to memory what the jaws look like, but you can try it if our locations make it a reasonable solution...

  • Why have a few teeth on my cassette worn, only small cogs, all in the same place

  • Meant to look like that. Shifting ramps, or whatever they are called?

  • Oh! Maybe I’m usually a SRAM sort of guy

  • How easy is it to true up a 46 mm deep section with a small defection after a head on with a idiot mtb rider only a few mill .

  • Shouldn't be a problem

  • Hello all. Cryptic one... sorry.

You know those carbon aero shaped seatposts that have a flat edge which has a grippy bit on in order to avoid slipping?

I'm confident I've seen that grippy stuff on a roll, like tape so it can be re-applied if it wears off...

It's also sometimes around the clamp area on carbon handlebars. I'm sure you know what I mean.

Does anyone know what that's called and where I might be able to get some?

    Please and thanks.

  • That's usually more of a finish, I don't think I've ever seen it as something replaceable and the fit should be close enough that trying to destroy things with, say, skateboard grip tape wouldn't work as it's too thick to fit. Just whack some carbon assembly paste on whatever you need grippier.

  • Yeah, that's where I've landed in the past when doing any type of refinishing that involves losing that textured bit.

I've worked on bikes that have come raw from the dealers and have the grippy adhesive stuff as a sticker to apply after paint, and an accompanying roll for handlebars but I just can't find it anywhere. It's quite frustrating!

It's for a customer who is having a post-crash refin done privately but they're quite particular so I'm looking to get it "like new" if I can! Less for functionality and more for aesthetics than anything else to be honest... just looking to avoid a customer service conflict shall we say?

    Thanks for the reply though.

  • All the grip and anti slip tapes are pretty coarse, if you're doing the finishing could you spray something with fine particles on so it looks right, even if it's not actual tape?

  • Yeah. That's an option but I'm not the one finishing it... it's being outsourced and then I'm the one who's gonna touch it last so everything is my fault!

That's a good shout though. I'll contact the refinisher. Thanks for the problem solving. Appreciate it.

  • Thanks for the problem solving.

Good to even out some of the problem creating.

  • Can I get a sanity check on this chain length?

Photos show it in small/small, small/large and large/large. It’s not rideable in larger large but any extra chain length would make it unrideable in small/small. I thought a tighter chain would d better but maybe I should have left it rideable in large/large rather than small/small?

The mech seem very far from the cassette when going up through the gears with it in the large ring, is that just how mechs are these days?

Front chainring are 30/46, cassette is 11/43 and rear diameter is a Deore 5130.

  • That's an ambitious range you're asking for. Pretty sure 5130 is meant to be 1x with 32T capacity - you're asking for much more with a 2x set-up. It's probably fine as long as you're riding it and don't shift into big/big by accident.

  • 5130 is 1x10s, so it won't have the capacity for a FD. You are definitely insane. Sorry to bear bad news.
