  • I wonder if there's a way to have an illuminated glass splashback behind the hob

Do not let this man design your kitchen

  • Fuck you man.

    My kitchen looks great.

  • The ones I have (no idea what unfortunately as they were here when we moved in) have a motion operated switch so you just wave your hand and they turn on.

  • It's like a window in to your soul (/kitchen)

  • That wouldn't wash with the design committee. The backsplash area will be tiled, probably very expensively 😥

  • The kitchen we inherited in our last flat had blue LEDs in the kick boards.

  • what about one of those IRSTA ikea panel led’s that are 600 width to go under a cabinet? not sure if they are shallow enough but they are slimline so it fixed under the shelf will look ok especially as it’s a pure lit rectangle and not some strip with dotted led’s, it will give a better softer illumination from a larger surface area

  • There will be no cabinets over the hob area. My current thinking is some kind of adjustable wall lights that preferably don't look like I've stapled an anglepoise to the wall. But I can't find anything I (think ms_com will) like.

  • Joking aside I guess what is in my head is those light panel things that give you diffused indirect light.

My glass suggestion was thinking about a material that is heat resistant and easy to clean. And I swear hardly anyone here ever seems to think about cleaning all the stylish kitchen shit. But then my ideal would be a feature like at the very end of this https://youtu.be/OmZ5kmoICtw?si=2vnJsqjrcCRRrjIo

I have no idea if anything like this exists. My quick search seemed to just show glass splashbacks with coloured downlighting.

Oh right, Mr symths IRSTA ikea panels are pretty much it.

  • I know but a very slim led 1 cm thick underside of the shelf would give better light over the hob and less obtrusive than a spot fixture

  • Everything else here is very much obtrusive so that's not so much of a problem

  • That's a green balaclava?

  • if the shelves are custom items, can you get an led strip rebated into the underside?
the IKEA led panels we have on the underside of our cabinets are really slim and daisy chain together, and have a remote control dimmer that's magnetic so it's just stuck to the fridge.

  • They'll be custom in that I'll likely be making them out of some reclaimed timbers from somewhere. Maybe I can spec a spur off the lighting circuit above the oven/fridge units for wiring something like that up in future.

  • Special ops, licence to kill?

  • Nah that's the balaclava with three small holes. I mean the ones worn by grown people that look like they stole it from a kid.
Like worn in the picture with exposed beams up thread.
We have balaclavas, no exposed beams yet.

  • that's what I did with mine, sockets on top of the cupboard with the oven in then routed the wires down the back etc.
it might be cool to have a gap at the back of the shelves to the wall and put led strips on the back edge so you get a kind of up/down wall wash effect?

  • Something like this?

  • As someone’s already mentioned, this only works with a warm-roof build-up. Ours has 170mm of PIR insulation on top of acoustic mat, above the birch ply sat on the joists.

  • Warm roof build up so no compromise on insulation - timber roof structure doesn’t typically need to be fire protected - steels holding up the house need fire protection (boxing in - or paint coating if you are doing the industrial exposed look) . Surface spread of flame may need consideration but there are clear coatings available. Acoustic separation - no issue for back extension / loft situations obvs or in private dwellings (pretty sure) - if it was separating floors for flats - yes.

  • Plaster going up inside.

  • And walls going up around decking area outside.

  • Anyone had a worktop join crack after not that long? The (very good) company who fitted it suggest the base units may have moved slightly and to speak to builder, then they can repair it (for £100!).
Builder was a cowboy and will never build allowed back. Shall I try and screw the two base units together?
Might not pay the £100 and just rake it out and add some silicone..

  • Use the proper colourseam or colour fill rather than silicone.

  • Ceiling light fitting suggestions for a small coat hanging alcove please (i took the door off the hall cupboard basically) - something of this ilk but cheaper ideally
