  • @Regal squeeky bum time over then. Congrats 🍾

  • Yep, cheers, really pleased to see it get made. :)

  • meca quartz

It's a shame my Breitling is so bling, too bling for every day wear, because the Meca Quartz is great, sweeping second chrono too for all the 'things that make you go mmm' satisfaction.

  • Does anyone own a Gshock DW5600 or similar style of square Gshock ? Looking to buy one for a watch I can wear when doing manual work

  • Yep. I have one on a textile strap with the inverted display.

Would recommend the watch, but with normal display.

  • Hope that helps:

  • Yeah, many of us do.

The GW-M5610 is the classic reference G-Shock. The current model has an LED backlight now, some people prefer the old electroluminescent backlight but it doesn't make a big difference. In terms of size, robustness/reliability, solar charging, battery life etc, it's still the best that Casio make. The DW-5600 models are fine but don't self-charge, don't have the radio time sync feature and (annoyingly) have a beep when you change modes that you can't turn off. The module inside them is slightly more basic in terms of features.

This is the current GW-M5610, the "U" is for updated (with the LED backlight):

Unless you need some specific feature (eg compass, altimeter, diving timer, tide indicator etc) that's what I'd recommend.

Definitely go for the normal display as @pdlouche says, the inverted ones are much harder to read. Don't go for a Bluetooth model unless you really need to sync it to your phone, the battery life is worse.

  • I find the backlight turns off too quick. Check if you can change the duration.

I wear a sports watch a lot of the time, over a gshock, because it's easier to use, better screen readability and ajustable backlight, plus vibrate alarm.

  • Agree with all the above. IIRC my 5600 was on special so I bought it over the 5610 type. I don’t regret it as I like it when I wear it.

However as above, yes, that 5610 U is the one to buy.

  • On the 5610U, as with other LED-illuminated G-Shocks, you can choose 1.5s or 3s duration for the light.

There are G-shocks that do all those things, eg the GBX-100 series. It has a MIP screen (more like a Kindle than the trad LCD screens) which has really good readability, plus a vibrate alarm, adjustable backlight time, etc. But they are larger and more expensive than the 5610 and don't solar charge.

  • On the 5610U, as with other LED-illuminated G-Shocks, you can choose 1.5s or 3s duration for the light.

    That's good.

I guess my point is, sports watches are pretty good and robust. G shocks aren't exactly cheap either. Though my gshock thata been in a draw 4 years still has the correct time and running...

  • What do you mean by a sports watch?

  • As others have said, definitely go solar and radio time and I wouldn't bother with bluetooth as the watch should last longer than any companion app.

Personally I also like the pro-trek models for tough watches that are a bit more readable.

  • Not the classic term. I have a Garmin 955. A watch for actually doing sports. Not for sporting at the latest social event.

  • For me manual work means metal case + sapphire crystal. Casios are mostly plastic glass so scratch easily.

  • Sapphire shatters when struck though, so pick your poison.

  • Right. I don’t understand why you’d pick that for doing manual work in if you just needed to know the time. It’s several times the price of a 5610, needs regular charging, and I doubt it’s as tough.

The alternative is just buy an F91W and replace it if/when you smash it.

  • It does yeah but you'd have to really fuck something up to pop it

  • Oh I just wear it all the time and forget to change it. They're tough is kind of my point. I wouldn't buy it to do manual work but then if you have one already.

I wear the Chris Ward Colchester to do a lot of manual work. I just wear whatever I'm wearing.

I think my initial point was the the gshock isn't exactly cheap for a beater and that I find the buttons on their finicky small and the time hard to read sometimes.

  • It's hard to add anything to regal's 10/10 post, but if we're talking about alternative tough watches the new Pro Trek PRG-340SC is nice Imo. As is the camo one - which is very not my thing usually

Love the big time numbers, which is often the one issue with a lot of gshocks.

  • That’s something I really like about the GBX-100 (although you can set the screen to show various different things).

  • It sounds like the 5610 is the one to get.
I don't really care about fancy features or Bluetooth connectivity. I'm looking for a solid and reliable timekeeper that I can wear all the time. I can find the GW-M5610U-1 where I'm from (Belgium). I didn't even know about the solar charging but that's a huge plus.

    Additional questions:
Is there modding for these watches?
Does the watch mentioned above have a beep? I don't want it to make unbearable noise when I don't ask for it. I don't want an alarm to go off ever, I have my phone for that.
What does the "-1" mean at the end of the name? I find that these names are so confusing
