which is howling so loud it’s making cars hit their brakes
Good thing!
That bike needs some riser bars

Good thing!
Ha! Yeah it was ok until someone panicked at a mini roundabout, started randomly looking around everywhere and smashed the brakes. Good job I had space down the side because cantis
really are quite shitaren’t great for emergency stops. -

Something has started jumping in the drivetrain. I thought at first it was the indexing gone out of kilter, but I've not been able to turn the adjuster because it's seized solid from not being touched for years. I've been regularly treating it to a bit of WD40 so hopefully it'll free itself off in time.
It doesn't look like it's out and it's not making clickety clickety noises like it's gone out of adjustment, so I have convinced myself it might be the pawls jumping in the freehub. A girl at work recently pulled her classic Shimano one apart and said it was relatively easy to open and that the pawls were just gummed up. Once cleaned and re-greased it was fine. I thought I'd have a crack at mine since it's not the loosest of ratchets and might need a clean and some fresh lube.

Well, this proved inconclusive. The ratchet and pawls were pretty clean and lubed with a light oil. I cleaned it out and re-lubed with fresh oil anyway. Next to check is the indexing once I get the barrel adjuster freed up. I don't think I've done enough miles for it to be a worn cassette or stretched chain causing the jumping.

Put the wheel back on today ready to ride to work tomorrow. Thought I’d have a go at freeing the ferrule in the barrel adjuster, so dribbled a bit of Plusgas into it for good measure. I think I can safely say this wasn’t going to come out by itself. Will have to drill this out.

Apologies for my dirty fingers to clean fingernails ratio. I appreciate how unlegit that makes me look.

Took longer to set this up and clear up afterwards than it did to do the actual job, but that came out pretty well. Saved.

Rebuild time. I’m going to be putting this back into mtb guise with the Monkeylites, 9-speed X0 and DX brakes as per the original build. I’ve been putting this off for ages because the bars, 9-speed stuff and brakes are on my cargo bike, and that means practically a full rebuild for both bikes. The 10-speed 105 on this will go back into the stash and I have 10-speed X0 and Avid vees for the cargo.

Actual rebuild day. Got to say it’s been great for smashing over the trashed roads around here with the drop bars, but it is a bit of a handful like that with a Hamax and child on the back. So, off with the 10-speed Shimano 105, drop bars and TRP Eurox; on with the 9-speed SRAM X0, risers and DX brakes.
Everything is also getting a damn good clean too, because I’ve done almost nothing to this bike except ride it and add oil. One really muddy ride a couple of weeks ago where I nearly slipped into the river sort of finished it off!

Long day. But that’s it rebuilt. Just small adjustments to make now.

Looks great with the flat bars.

Thanks!
My hands are chopped to ribbons this morning. I forgot how sharp some of this stuff gets.

Yes this is rude! Great frame, good on you for holding on to it for so long!

I bet that front end is super stiff with the Alu forks / bars / stem set up!
Never thought about getting a steel fork to soften the front end?

I’ll be honest, it’s pretty good! I’ve ridden some aluminium bikes which have been unbearable but this one feels completely planted and soaks up the bumps. The massive tyres help!

Out in the wild. I did the shopping run for a test ride and apart from adjusting the gear cable it needed nothing done. Didn’t even notice how smashed up the roads were. Well happy.

I’m down at my elderly mum’s near Hastings for a couple of days while she’s in hospital having a hip replacement. I brought a bike down to do my running around by bike because bugger doing it all by car, but by jaysus it’s hilly! Glad I brought this one and not my daily which is fixed gear. Burning through calories. I’ve just done 2 mains for 2 and an 8 pack of poppadoms!
Parked here earlier at the hospital because 69.

My bad knee is feeling a bit squishy so I’ve been doing a few more of miles on this as it’s got gears. Did one of my normal 20 mile road routes this morning via a mate’s house for breakfast. So that’s like 68 miles on this bike this week. Was interested to see this mtb vs roady not waving back at each other thing that was being talked about on another forum. First bike I saw at 7am was a roady waving at me and I almost missed him! Most did not initiate a wave but waved back, until it got a bit later and the group riders were out and most of them did not wave back or even acknowledge. Fun ride though and I enjoyed my merguez sausages, fried potatoes and beans at my mate’s house.

Pressed this back into service shortly after new year. The roads round here have been absolutely trashed from the ice in the cold snaps and I was struggling to navigate my track bike safely round the holes. The big tyres on this mostly eliminate that as a problem and just bash over everything without breaking a sweat.
One thing I do need to deal with is the back brake, which is howling so loud it’s making cars hit their brakes. I re-set the brake pads at lunchtime with as much toe in as I could realistically get on them, but it’s still making way too much noise. I reckon a new set of linings ought to do the trick, once I’ve worked out which ones fit the holders.
