Ah you have a 2.5 then. The 1.9 and 2.4 don't have an ECU. Never been able to bump a vehicle with an ECU and a low voltage battery and no charging.
Know of a guy that had a syncro that someone replaced the engine for a Passat one, seems that that engine killed the gearbox/diff. He ended up replacing the whole drive train from a Passat syncro.

This one is 2003 and definitely wouldn’t work without electricity, apparently due to the fuel pump. All good now. The guy who fixed it had a T4 Syncro that he said was now putting out 200bhp. Not sure exactly what he’s done to it.
