I love reading about the backlash.
I used to go there a lot in the early 2010s for meetings about financing films. Always in a suit. Probably in a tie too back then.
I didn't really get it until someone explained that it was an office space for creatives who were too small to have their own office in soho. I guess in today's parlance, a weework for creative grifters.
Tbh £3k pa for worldwide access doesn't sound like a lot to me. It's more than most of the St James clubs, but not a crazy amount more.

Incredible article. The lack of self awareness is astonishing, but I don’t thinks that surprises anyone here.

£3k pa for worldwide access
There's plenty of co-working spaces that are a lot more than that for anything more than occasional access.
(The one I use is £249/mo before VAT for unlimited access. And that just gets you a hot desk, not a private desk or meeting room. Free tea/coffee though.)

I'd need to calculate how much I spend on tea/coffee at home, before deciding if £249/mo for a desk is good value...
-
• #7342
It's not the free tea/coffee that represents the value. It's the ability to get some work done when Mrs GB also occasionally works from home. We don't have the space for us both to work from home with suitable healthy setups, and she is on calls most of the day, loudly.
I'm also on the cheap plan (5 days/month that's ~£99/mo), and work pay for most of it (I pay some of it since it's a taxable benefit).
It's less than some people I know pay for osteopaths given their shit work setup on a kitchen table with a crappy wooden chair with no proper back support.

I was being purposefully obtuse and cynical at the same time - apologies.
FWIW, I looked into coworking spaces when it wasn’t clear what my office situation would be after the pandemic (I couldn’t face WFH everyday).

Friend in music PR essentially runs his business from Shoreditch House.
He takes all calls and meetings in there, takes sandwiches every day to keep costs down, and treats it like a 9-5 office. He leaves for home just as the braying media pintsmen start arriving. It sounds like my idea of hell but apparently was quite cost-competitive when he looked at available options against co-working spaces etc

I looked at membership when they opened the Shoreditch, Chiswick and NY offices as there was a chance I would be working in NY a lot (never happened) and I often worked late at my own office in Chiswick, but decided to wait, and I'm glad I did as it would have been wasted. (we got sold to another company and the job moved to the City)
I met a TV exec once when out with a friend of mine. This was back when there was only one. He was extolling the virtues of Soho House and I decided it probably wasn't the place for me, as this guy was the biggest coked up bullshitter I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. He was pitching a show called "Blow shit up" at the time.

Presumably Channel 5 executives were very positive but suggested 'working in a reference to Nazis, unwelcome neighbours, and maybe ghosts. Yes, definitely ghosts'.
