Not with DJ’ing, but do have the HS5s (their smaller brother) as part of a home studio set up. I find them (for me) frustratingly flat in that I always feel they’re missing some body. As a reference monitor I’m sure they’re great and they certainly sound detailed but I felt there was a massive increase in quality and depth to any music with the additional HS8 sub, which I do rate for a home/small studio set up.
I’ve used the KRK5s and similar for work as foldback/control room monitors and much prefer the Yamahas, but if I was looking for something in a similar price bracket with a bit more ooph out the box I’d try and get a listen to some of the Mackie studio monitors. Just avoid the “pro-sumer” ones as they’re a bit naff IMHO, but easy enough to do by filtering out those with Bluetooth or only rca/speaker cable inputs vs XLR
But the important thing to remember for production is that most people will listen via headphones so whilst a nice set up at home is nice, it’s always worth mastering to make sure it sounds good on the basic Apple/Google wired headphones as well and not just on a higher end set up
Does anyone have any experience of DJing with Yamaha HS7's?
I like the idea of them and would like to move into production at some point. Possibly. I know they are very flat sounding.
