Does anyone have any experience of DJing with Yamaha HS7's?
I like the idea of them and would like to move into production at some point. Possibly. I know they are very flat sounding.

Not with DJ’ing, but do have the HS5s (their smaller brother) as part of a home studio set up. I find them (for me) frustratingly flat in that I always feel they’re missing some body. As a reference monitor I’m sure they’re great and they certainly sound detailed but I felt there was a massive increase in quality and depth to any music with the additional HS8 sub, which I do rate for a home/small studio set up.
I’ve used the KRK5s and similar for work as foldback/control room monitors and much prefer the Yamahas, but if I was looking for something in a similar price bracket with a bit more ooph out the box I’d try and get a listen to some of the Mackie studio monitors. Just avoid the “pro-sumer” ones as they’re a bit naff IMHO, but easy enough to do by filtering out those with Bluetooth or only rca/speaker cable inputs vs XLR
But the important thing to remember for production is that most people will listen via headphones so whilst a nice set up at home is nice, it’s always worth mastering to make sure it sounds good on the basic Apple/Google wired headphones as well and not just on a higher end set up

Ok thanks. I'm still very much undecided though. I'll take a look at the Mackies.

Cheers, it was fun. Not that busy, but then it was mid-week. Think they want me in on a Friday next time.

I'm on daytrip to Bristol but on family stuff so unlikely to be able to swing by. Hope it goes well.

• #360
Away for the weekend but hope to make it to one of these.

Well this ones cancelled now anyway 😭
My youngest has come out in a rash all over and my dog just bust his paw open, which all feels a bit unfair to leave for the babysitter (wife currently away on work).I’ll be playing some 45s at home and drinking wine on my own…
-
• #362
Damn, hope they are both ok.
Enjoy your wine and vinyl sesh!

Other than being be-rashed, my daughter is completely fine, which is slightly annoying! I’d just feel really shitty if she developed a temp while I was out or something like that. Dog fine too - other than being an idiot.

I played a 30 min set of 7's in a very quiet pub in central mcr tonight, it was low pressure & fun.
-
• #365
Sounds fun! What kind of stuff did you play? I've got another night coming up - 4th may. I was thinking of only taking 7s. I end up playing about 90% 7s anyway.
-
• #366
Here's
-h-GOOH a few of the tracks, it didn't flow great but was for folks to play chess under so I wanted fairly mellow mostly. The z7 to JO switch is quite early, I don't play both versions fully...Edit. Fuck knows why it hates this embed link possibly the hyphens? The click link works I think?

7's defo better for travel light. I need more though.
I might go heavy box of 12's next time though & play an hour of Mo-Wax / Ninja Tune if they'll have me back.
-
• #368
Excellent, listening now.
And I'd listen the heck out of a ninja tune/Mo-Wax mix.
-
• #369
Ah hope you didn't think I'd posted mix link there, just the tracks from YT in a playlist. I'm so rusty there'd be very little mixing just letting tracks run mostly. Maybe if I get more time & headspace in the future I could revisit.
-
• #370
Yeah, I got it :-)
I don’t really do any technical mixing - I’m overlapping at best. I did play out the other week and did a grand total of 3 very quick beat matched blends, but that was just opportunistic, noticing they were almost the same bpms.

Bristol headz: I'm playing records a week tomorrow.
disclaimer - I'm not responsible for poster!
The stock photo of a controller made my vinyl-only toes curl a little :-D

The few times I tried to properly mix when out I'd end up shaking so much I couldn't put the needle on. Even using timings to cue and run it an intro / fade has me shaking. Fuck anxiety.
-
• #373
Hope it goes well. I might be playing tunes at a private party weekender... Sunday chill slot hopefully, just depends on if I can get there for various reasons.

I might have shared this before but refound it today. It is a rough and raw mix I was making back in 2007 and never finished, it's a bit off in places but mostly ok to my ears. I've chucked it onto Mixcloud now.

I think I got so bored of listening to it over and over back then trying to develop it that I have needed this long to start to enjoy it once more.
