  • no but ideally it's on our list for later this year. our stairs/landing gets no natural light and it makes it feel grim as fuck.

  • No offence intended.
Was just signalling that not everyone on here is in London/the UK.

  • Oh no sweat, just clarifying and playing along.

  • Yes, would recommend. Obviously doesn't do a vast amount on short days during a grim UK winter, but it's still a noticeable improvement (great in the summer) and good where the space/lack of windows/roof angles etc. make it workable. It was part of other work so made total sense to put it in at the time.

  • same situation @small was it expensive to install?

  • No it was not really. It was nearly 10 years ago though. At the time it cost about £500.00. The kit was nearly £300 and I gave the installer/roofer £200 cash for labour and a couple of odd bits needed. Took him about half a day, he just used ladders.

Well worth it though. We moved two years later, but had no issues with it. You can get lights to install inside too. Was told at the time that Velux were the best ones, although that may have meant ‘easiest’ to install.

  • 18mm or 25mm ply for flooring? 25mm is sooooo spenny!

  • As replacement floorboards or for levelling over existing?

  • We lost Wi-Fi on Friday afternoon. In the same afternoon, new neighbours had Virgin connected.

We’re also Virgin. Technician coming out tomorrow. But today I see that someone has methodically unscrewed the incoming cable from our connection and screwed it into a cable disappearing into next door’s.

Whoever did it had to cut through gaffer tape and open up the weather proof box that’s out of shot.

Looks like Virgin’s other technician fancied an easy Friday afternoon.

  • Exactly. I’ve kicked off massively - called Virgin and basically said: “here’s what your technician will discover tomorrow”.

I’m not mistaken btw - if I plug that cable into ours, outer internet comes back.

  • I’ve plugged the neighbours back in now. Very tempting to reconnect us, but I’m treading carefully to not lose any moral high ground!

  • Door nearly done. Not super neat round the glass so prob going to tape it up and bring the paint on to the glass to hide previous paint on glass.

  • That looks great - lovely colour.

  • Thanks. Only took about 12 coats.

  • Forum opinion on this, we get these patches in our bedroom. My suspicion is condensation, there is nothing on the exterior to suggest penetrating damp, the render looks okay.

The only thing is that it is always these patches and they NEVER dry, even after a heatwave - guessing stained? Why would condensation pick these random spots?

Id be 100% sure it was condensation but the staining is making me question it, however they dont get notably bigger after it pisses it down and if it was penetrating damp id expect the staining to be worse?

Had a surveyor round a year or so ago who was equally baffled but said likely condensation.

  • Bridging between the inner and outer skins? Could be some sort of building spoil or the wall ties?

  • sorry should have said, solid brick wall, no cavity

  • Basically I am tempted to rip down all the gypsum and re-lime it

Quite a lot of work/money to not be 100% sure it will solve the issue tho

Here's a section of wall that also had a similar patch so I investigated. The lime(?) did seem damp under it, so beyond surface level condensation?? but then not surprising given any moisture has nowhere to go under the gypsum and concrete render on the external.

  • @Grumpy_Git as replacement floorboards. Current boards are all over the place at varying different depths. It’s a very small room so seems easier to rip is all up and lay something flat.

  • Would think either would be fine. Just look at floor levels between rooms?

  • Yeah other boards are about 20mm pine so hoped 18 would be ok in ply. Can’t get over how expensive plywood is these days though!

  • are you putting something on top of it and/or is there a reason you couldn’t use OSB as a cheaper alternative?

  • Will be laying something over the top. Possibly cork but unsure yet. I was more drawn to ply for the strength and longevity esp with any water damage or whatever #kids
