  • I've seen a lot more cranks come off from under tightening than I've seen issues from over tightening

I also have issues when people ham fisted it to oblivion without a torque wrench and end up causing the bolt to be rounded.

14Nm is the max, but at least no customer return with a loose crank with the exception of an older cockier freelancer whom almost fucked yo a customer bike going down Hardknott.

  • Will a Campy road front mech play well with 46/30t chainset?

  • They do actually, the question is whether the derailleur go low enough if you have brazed on.

Almost all road FD work fine with 46/30.

  • I have one of these nice looking and light, but cheap Chinese carbon posts. Had it for a couple of years. Recently though, mid commute, the saddle has just dropped off. My first thought was that someone had tried to steal the saddle but got disturbed, but that can't have happened twice. Any ideas? I thought maybe user error and I hadn't tightened it but obvs the second time I made 100% sure it was tight and solid. Maybe the saddle jiggles forwards and slides off the rails?

  • Hi,
Any independent great bike mechanic in Becton area or around Shoreditch, who could service DuraAce rear hub and true wheels?

  • Vibration can undo bolts. Probably just that. Put the thread lock on?

  • Good shout. Will get some.

  • Give Hop Kingdom a shout.

Big Dave formerly of LMNH fame is now there.

  • Anyone know if this looks ok? It all seems fine (main bolt tight, no play) except odd how much thread I've had to expose on the preload ring?

Middleburn RS8 with standard Shimano BB and 73mm shell

  • How’s the chainline?

Could they have an axle for a wider bb? Middleburn makes 8 different lengths of spindle, which is kinda counter intuitive since they say they’re not interchangeable but that also sell them their own.

  • I haven't checked the chainline, will do that next as well as try to measure the axle length.

Axle stuff from Middleburn does indeed seem weird. They say they are factory bonded, but easily swapped. I guess they mean by them, if you send them in, rather than by the user.

Need to check with the seller I got them from, on here, I guess it's possibly the axle for 83mm shells. Would have thought seller would have mentioned if that was the case though as it's hardly the normal standard

  • I've replaced some PF30 bearings and in torquing back up the cranks the adaptor I was using to go from 1/2 drive wrench to a 1/4 socket sheared somewhere between 20nm and 40nm....suggested torque is 40nm. Safe to ride or wait till new socket piece in right drive size arrives....?

  • Have you got a normal Allen key (or whatever the fitting is) that you can use?

40nm is a fair old bit so I’d just horse them up and send it.

  • Is this Keo cleat worn enough that it needs replacing? The grippy bit has mostly gone and it looks a bit thin at the front but I feel like I don't have a good sense with these and have probably replaced before I needed to in the past. Ta!

  • 10mm Allen, but only the one in the pic with stuck cheese inside. I'll wing it tomorrow and do it properly when the bits arrive. Ta

  • Is this Keo cleat worn enough that it needs replacing?

    I'd still use it

  • Nah, the bottom is only worn from walking. It's the top lip that hooks the pedal and that's probably totally fine

  • Thanks 👍 Think I might try the covers when I replace these, they don’t seem that durable (not sure when these were put on but don’t think it was too many kms ago)

  • they don’t seem that durable

They last a long time on the bike, it's touching the ground that kills them 🙂 The ones on my race shoes have been there more than a decade and about 6000 miles, and they're less worn than yours.

  • Had an altercation with a pothole during today’s shitlaning session. Keep riding and monitor or new rim time?

  • assuming that's an alu rim, just keep an eye on it.

Bend it back, and raise a claim with the council.

  • Get a Knipex pliers wrench on that and bend it back, then keep an eye on it. An adjustable wrench works, just not quite as accurately

  • If I had the choice to either buy a:

    • new sunrace 11sp cassette, or a
    • used SRAM 1130 cassette
      For roughly the same cost.
      Which should I decide on?
