  • I thought it was Pierluigi Colina (seems to have let himself go a bit though)

  • Wait, it isn't Richard O'Brien? Will you start the fans, please!

  • Happy to go and be your drug mule when the time is right 😹

  • Pardon my ignorance but what makes a Sachs frame £6k?

I get the whole 'handmade, one at a time by an artisan' stuff, but there are many builders creating better looking frames with cooler paint jobs.

  • but there are many builders creating better looking frames with cooler paint jobs.

    no there are not

  • I await to see one in a cool paintjob, they are mostly red/orange and white.

  • It's all about reputation and the esteem within which these things are held. As in all creative/artistic fields there is an artisan hierarchy.

  • Surely, it is simply the fact that he can charge that much and still have a full order book?

Edit: fwiw I think he’s great, has a totally old school/classic vibe and has supported a cross team for years. I have a lot of time for people who do things simply but very very well.

    Fully agreed.

Looking forward to what’s coming! This thread and style of bike are totally my jam.

  • Paul sadoff - just as good a builder , heavily supports the cyclo x world and is a lot more humble (frames are $2k too)

  • There's parallels with things like the beer world.

Does a £40 rare lambic taste nicer than a £10 one? Probably not, but [relative scarcity x a good origins story x an enigmatic frontperson x however long it takes to make x hype] all feed into the ticket price.

  • Does a £40 rare lambic taste nicer than a £10 one?

Bad example because yes it does

  • Yeaah true, though I reckon you only really appreciate it if you're up to your neck in that world.

Otherwise you're like 'lol, a £40 beer that tastes like sour pennies' in the same way we're like 'lol, a steel bike for 6 grand'

  • At the most basic level, because that's what he can charge and still fill his order book, as others have noted (economics 101: an item is worth what someone will pay).

You're also paying for experience, expertise, and (perhaps most significantly) the brand name/vibe/symbolism that goes with it. In the same way as the price of almost any very high end discretionary purchase is much less about cost of production, and much more about the perceived value to the buyer.

As I think I posted earlier in this thread, whether or not that's worth it is wholly subjective.

  • Pink bikes are cool.
    Sachs actually builds them himself.
The direct connection to a real live human being is a very rare thing these days.
I have a real Supercorsa from the old Cinelli place. It’s bent and rusty and unusable but it’s a treasure of happier times. An off the peg Giant won’t give me that.
I walked into the shop where the guys made them, a guy with greasy thick fingers measured me, another guy said he’d make it. The place reeked of grinders on steel and smoke, there was dirt on the floor. That was a nice person to person interaction.
Now who knows who makes them?
De Rosa still makes steel bikes, Ugo’s grandson makes some of them. But Doriano builds under the Bixxis name. If he was good enough for Merckx eh.
Pegoretti, I don’t think he did any work after his cancer. He just signed the chainstay.

  • 100% there are worth every single penny of the price, if you want one enough to pay the price they want.

    From beyond the grave?

  • Not had confirmation of a slot yet

    Any updates on this?

  • “I have just had an email.
Slot is confirmed.” (22 days ago 🤓)

  • Oops missed that

  • Long thread on his site about build slots. Seems he took on too many, so only takes on a year's work at a time. 40 frames (and that's in addition to his RSCX racing team bikes).

It's $6600 for frame, fork and cane creek headset. No internal routing for electronic groupsets, although Sram will obviously work. Road frames (30 clearance) or CX frames (1x, 32+ clearance).

Bikeflights comes up to $2200 on top with duty so it's well worth flying over with a gaspipe build dripping in SuperRecord...

  • Is there a picture of your RS @amey?

  • Did you get it built with the S+S couplings, or did you have them added later?

  • i am sorry, i thought you were trolling, that is not a sachs
