  • I have a Raleigh Royal frame that I’m wanting to do a fbnpna build with but can’t decide whether the modern 10speed Deore derailleur and cassette I have is going to look wrong on such a skinny steel frame.

I don’t think I’ll go with modern cranks but I l also can’t decide between 1x or 2x. I have some 6600 Ultegra cranks which might look ok but maybe something older (sq taper?) that can take smaller rings would be better? Something like 42/32? The cassette I have is an 11-42 I think.

I’m thinking I’ll add canti posts and increase the tyre clearance on the frame. I’ll build a fork, maybe a truss type, maybe do a front rack, integrated into the truss fork. Swept back bars, downtube shifters? Downtube for the front mech (if I’m having one) and a thumby/rapid fire for the rear? I’m thinking friction shifting with 10 speed is probably not gonna work very well?

I have some of those cheap Superstar road wheels from a wee while back but they’re all black and I’d really prefer some silver rims. I also want a dynamo on it so reckon I’ll be building wheels for it at some point.

  • Sounds like a good plan. On the 10 speed friction shifting, I have 11 speed friction with an MS barend and it works great. Dropping down from the big cog is weird though. You just touch the lever and it drops. The rest are muscle memory ;)

  • Interesting, is your barend shifter a dedicated 10speed one? I’m wondering if a shifter that’s designed for fewer speeds will have enough throws to cover the 10 speed range.
