  • Had our Yuba Kombi E5 electric cargo bike stolen from our Asgard locker in the front garden last night.
Have reported it to the police, and it was insured so hopefully will get most of the cost back.

Am pissed off for many reasons, but particularly because they were brazen enough to force their way into the asgard shed at about 12.30 at night while we were home. Which means that now I don’t want to get a new bike and store it there.

We had a knog tracker fitted to it that indicated it was at an address not too far away in Lewisham. Went down there and sure enough found the chain and padlock that had been in the pannier bags abandoned in the driveway of the house.

Didn’t really feel like getting stabbed so didn’t go knocking on any doors, but have updated the police report with that address.

Don’t expect to get it back, but if anyone does see a bright orange Yuba Kombi E5 for sale anywhere please let me know. Only had the bike since December, so don’t even have any photos of it.

  • Sorry to hear that, Sam. As you say, very brazen. Make sure you follow up the police report, e.g. by calling them and telling them about the address again, and making it clear that you think they can expect to find a house full of bikes there. I think there's a very high likelihood that this is the case, as people don't just do thefts like yours ad hoc and as a one-off. It'll obviously be best while you still get the tracker signal from there. It sounds to me like a police success story on a plate if they take it seriously.

Gleefully stating the obvious, the problem with sheds, hangars, and the like is always that they're secure until people work out a method to do them, and then they tend to do lots of them in a short time, like the recent spate of hangars being cut open (many have now been newly reinforced). Static facilities or doing things like locking up your bike at the same stand on the street every day if you don't have workplace parking enable thieves to scope the bike(s) out and prepare what they need to prepare. That doesn't mean that all Asgard sheds in your area are now at risk, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more of them soon.

    Hope you get it back!

  • Thanks Oliver.

To give the police their due. They did call me a little earlier and say they were going to go to the address that the tracker is pinging and 'have a look around'. They didn't commit to actually breaking down doors or anything, but it is better than nothing.
