Hey all,

Where are you buying film these days and what are your general costs of shooting film?

I used to shoot about a roll month, maybe more for the last 8-10 years but have probably gone down to one or two a year because of the expense. Its making me consider selling off some of my coveted cameras that I religiously spent years trying to source and get a good deal on.

£10/15 per roll, £3/4 postage to a cheaper or prefered developers , £8/10 on developing + postage. Getting near on a pound a picture...

I try not to think about the cost. Just a hobby, cheaper than the pub. The days of Poundland Agfa and Asda Dev and scan are long gone through.

Yeah very true, its not hugely expensive. I am just a lot less frivolous when I have the cost per photo in my subconscious and ends up taking ages to take the last few photos on a roll!

I dont really worry about the cost now, for how little I actually shoot these days. We all waste more money on coffees that last 14 secs than images which might last forever.

If you've got a lab near you that will do it, bulk-rolled cine film (Kodak Vision3) is loads cheaper than the premium colour films. I've got a roll sat on the shelf that I've not tried yet; people seem to be getting good results with it though.

As with others above I try not to worry about the cost, but also don't shoot that much (less than a roll a month). I reminisce about the cheap days every now and then but also try to remember that Boots/ASDA dev and scan was pretty shit, looking back. Scratched up negs, weird colour shifts, no B&W dev by the end...

Lol yeah, looked at my old Asda scans recently. So much dust + crap on them! Mind you the photos were pretty rubbish too. Cost makes you take a bit more care.

My XA has finally given up, not firing (have repaired stuck shutter button previously), battery system not working, light meter etc... When it has worked more recently its been temperemental. From looking online, it seems repairs probably not possible/not worth it

Has anyone had success with XA repairs in London? Or, has anyone by any chance got a working XA they'd part ways with...?

There is a XA for parts (not sure if it's in London) on eBay at the moment (looks repairable to me) for 40 quids? can't recall

I am dealing with a London based seller for a XA with flash for 130 quids, but would like it to go down a bit.

Fuji GA645 fully working with a brand new shutter cable, no more than 15 rolls through. Cracked outer viewfinder glass but does not affect final image or usage as is not visible to the eye. Marks of used and dented lens cap but not cracked or broken.

Hi, does anyone on here have a recommendation for a neg scanner? Have seen some cheap ones, Veho for example, on ebay but no idea of the quality/capability. Scanning services are fine but don't appear to account for exposure (user competence maybe?) variability. Never likely to print much bigger than A5.

The nikon one was decent.

Not got any recommendations but good scanning services should compensate for variance in exposure.

I sent off a roll to Make it Easy with completely guessed (ie shit) exposure and it all came back nicely balanced, for instance.

That said if you're only printing up to A5 kind of size then you'd probably be okay with a decent flatbed scanner. Might be a good bit cheaper than a dedicated 35mm scanner.

Get your stuff developed and scanned (in one go, like as a package) by a shop, using the bestest quality option you can afford (highest resolution, ideally un-compressed files), this will give you better files than scanning at home, stuff is usually auto-corrected (helping with bad exposure, to a degree) unless you ask them to not do this.

You can get good quality scans at home as well, but long story short:

• it's a tedious process, a pain in the ass, really, trust me
  
• you need a proper, dedicated 35mm scanner or a really good flatbed scanner
  
• you need proper (expensive) software like Silverfast to get somewhat close to the quality the shops can deliver with their (way better) scanners
