  • Don't suppose you want an android head unit+reversing camera for your mk6 do you? I have one from AliExpress, fitted once but never used, just need rid at this point so very negotiable price 🤣

  • Cheers, but I'm good. It's got Bluetooth, DAB, etc. Plus all the phone stuff is set up, so I think it would be too much faff and introduced too much risk.

  • Totally fair. I bought it for the ability to use google maps via android auto and because the bluetooth wasn't working on mine so it made sense. Makes much less sense now the car died and I'm driving a honda. If anyone else might be interested, the exact specs are per the order detailed attached and I'd take £50 or interesting trades 😂 I can also lend the trim-removal tools required to install, if anyone interested doesn't have.

  • is there a way for a garage to simply check if a 2008 golf tdi needs it cam belts done ?
is it like checking your bike chain for slack or tension. remove a panel and look inside ? just about to get my mums car mot'ed and would like them to check for cam belt wear.

also if the car fails it's emissions is it a simple job to replace the cat or is it scrap yard time ?

the car has been exceptionally well looked after, driven carefully by my mum and dad, they are [prepared to spend money on it rather than replace it as i don't think it has ever been over revved.

  • If you have no record of it being changed then I would get it done anyway on a car of that age that is worth keeping

  • I want to say, yes you can view it. Although replacing is a fairly involved process.

Generally VW have a recommended interval for replacing. Iirc this is conservative so follow this. Given that failure is catastrophic, it's probably worth doing.

This is based on me remembering posts about the diesel when I was searching about my petrol engine.

  • Yes you can view the belt, but that doesn't show much. Unless there is a problem with badly fitting belt.

If it hasn't been changed, that you know of, get it changed. If it is a garage, let them supply and fit incase things go wrong.

If it fails emissions, look at what the issue is that is causing the problem. Things like injectors, glow plugs, diesel particulate filters getting clogged.

If the car does lots of short journeys, change the oil and filter more often. Using the correct spec oil for the engine.

Is it the 1.9 or the 2.0?

  • So why would a car battery go from working to at reading of less than 2v.

Not had a battery go so low so quick.

  • So battery proper fucked to the point the alternator caused the casing to swell and hot to the touch.

And fuck Halfords, wrong battery supplied and charged a higher price than online too.

  • italian service? ie rag it and blow out the cobwebs.

  • Battery drain or a faulty cell

  • If in doubt change it- I’d always change the cambelt on a second hand car even if the previous owner said they changed it, the consequences of “oh, hang on that was the alternator belt” are severe.

  • This is one of the reasons when i bought my shitbox impreza, i opted to buy one needing a belt change and offered the cost of doing it less the asking price, and then did the timing belt, water pump, thermostat etc all in one go.

  • If in doubt, definitely change the timing belt. Nearly all my cars have had timing belts and interference engines. And I tend to buy older neglected French cars so yes, timing belt, water pump and thermo is always done within days of purchase.

And then it's the tyres, the suspension bushings, the brakes, the wiper blades, the cam cover gaskets etc etc.

  • Think multiple cell failure in the battery.

    Car just wanting attention.

  • Works well on all diesels IMO.

Xtype and Mondeo 2l diesel ran better after being thrashed for a couple of hours around France.

  • Today in cars I'm not going to buy but I'm currently obsessing over:

  • Buy it.

  • HELL YEAH BROTHER

  • I'd want an estate if I was to actually buy, and there's none for sale in the UK

  • Buy it because I can’t.

  • Probably the closest thing available here: https://m.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=1271483

  • Tasteful.

  • That’s very mild for here
