Which Tyres?

  • Anybody got much experience of s-works turbo cotton hell of the north, the ones that are 28mm wide?

I have them and put them on last summer with butyl inner tubes, and I only lasted two rides before I took them off as I thought the ride felt terrible and I got loads of gravel stuck in them and lost all confidence of them handling British roads.

I'm heading to Majorca next month, and was wondering whether it was worth investing in latex inner tubes and putting the turbo cottons back on, or just stick with my trusty Conti GP5000 clinchers and butyl inner tubes?

    Any advice, much appreciated.

  • I'd buy a pallet of turbo cottons if they were cheaper.

  • Majorca roads are nice but there’s always a patch of sharp stuff somewhere. I’d say stick the GP500s on

  • Cheers for the advice, I think i'll stick to my trusty GP5000's and maybe look into selling the turbo cottons as I think they're probably more appropriate as a race tyre and not appropriate for UK roads even in summer!

  • GP500s

Aren't they only 1/10 as good?

  • I'm enjoying my Vredestein Superpassos - Winter boots for my Sunday road bike to let the Veloflexes rest until the spring.

They feel like a quality tyre, ride nicely, have grip and aren't too heavy - and arent as £££ as GP5000s and feel like they are a bit less disposable than Pro Ones.

  • Yay, tyre friend! 🤗

Aye, first impressions are good. I've done a couple of rides on them including a long one and they felt lovely, very grippy and supple. Agree about feeling quality in hand, let's see how they hold up!

  • Latex tubes plus long descents, warm weather and open tubular might not be the safest option. Dragging brakes over long descents can pop latex tubes. GP5000 plus butyl or tubeless if you must

  • Bro it's 2024

  • I used to love the old tri comp fortezzas back in the olden days - have just bought a twin pack of the tubeless ones to tubelessify my newest road bike - £70 including a bottle of gloop - will report back

  • oh a lot cheaper tho

  • I'm hoping they're only 10% the price of GP5000s.

  • But sadly you only have a 1/10 chance of them being in stock

  • Could be interested in buying dependent on condition.

I have found the non-HoTN version still in stock in a few weeks and looking to get some of those ahead of the summer but interested in these if price is right....

  • Do you use the folding version? I got the non folding without realising and they feel mighty stiff and heavy. Worth trying or send back?

  • I think they were non folding yeah. They were cheaper than folding so I gave them a shot, they were great for fast commutes and fixed road rides

  • Ok I might give them a shot then thanks. Should be ok for winter miles, hopefully more grip and feel than gatorskins

  • I've been rolling around on some Specialized Roubaix 30/32mm tyres (tubeless) this year. Even on 20mm internal rims (Hunt Aerodynamicist), these blow up to a whopping 36mm!

Not the best choice for a potentially-pacey group ride, but they're comfortable. Any suggestions for tyres truly within the 28-32mm range and are affordable? If not I'll scour comparisons on BRR and prices once I've short-listed.

  • Sigma have put Vittoria Corsa Controls on sale at £35 on all options just after I bought a pair from them at a higher price point...

  • Cheers. The Corsa Control and Corsa N.EXT were already on my shortlist, I can't remember which of the two I preferred though. One tested better in the wet, just as good in other departments and was cheaper. I am after tubeless though.

  • Only collect from shop though?

  • Showing as

    In stock, available for delivery

    For me

  • Has any one used the Panaracer Agilest? Very cheap on wiggle atm and reviews seem ok.

I've rolled the dice on a couple of 25mm clinchers, will report back in due course... might be a while as they're meant for a 'summer' bike :S
