I think he would benefit enormously from riding for a team that could support him late into the major races, ideally with someone who was close to his level who could act as a tactical foil.

It must be easier to sign a couple of stronger support riders to Alpecin than for him to go to a new team. They signed Soren Kragh Andersen but I don't think he did particularly well. Jasper Philipsen did well though.

I can't imagine MVDP going to Trek or Ineos to be a joint leader but maybe I'm wrong.

He was generally one of the best supported in the latter stages last year in the classics,you could only argue Jumbo had more. Admittedly having someone to act consistently as a real foil was non-existent, though again, no other teams apart from Jumbo really have that.
