One last question from me, I like a decaf in the afternoon so I've been using only the right grams of beans and running through the grinder until they're gone.
I don't mind a few grains getting in the decaff and vice versa, and I'm not a perfectionist, but will this cause any issues?
I don't really want to go from no grinders to two grinders...
Edit, sorry wasn't meant to be @duncs!

Only that your decaf won’t be quite as decaf as it might be unless you purge some coffee first.
Also you tend to need to grind decaf finer, and just remembering where the adjuster was before you moved it doesn’t always work when you go back to it.

It's a 'smart grinder', so only need to remember the grind number, so that should be ok, just the slight contamination I guess.
Should be pretty minor though right?
-
• #25782
It will be fine. If you can be bothered you can put a small amount of decaf through to clear it out a bit more but probably not worth it.
-
• #25783
Yes the contamination will be fairly minor depending on your grinder’s retention. You might be able to see it, the two coffees will probably be quite different in colour.

Does nobody else just do a second, much shorter grind?
(Assuming your grinder does time grinds, of course.)
I do a 7.5 second grind, which does 14g of beans, and then 0.5g, which clears out the remaining 0.1g

But most grinders will always have coffee between the burrs and the exit which won’t come out until you grind next time. Running the grinder until no coffee comes out won’t stop stale coffee getting into your next dose. I think that’s why some people blow it through with bellows and all that carry-on.

hi all
log time lurger first time post here
so what ratios are people using, i tend toward a light/medium roast either V60 or Chemex so pour over and do 20g beans to 300g water
fairly new to the whole coffee set up (grinder is a Wilva Svart) so all tips tricks and help appreciated
Cheers

60 grams per litre is normally the recommended start point, then adjusting weight/grind to taste. I haven't used my Chemex in a while, but with their thicker filters I found myself grinding a bit more coarse relative to the V60. For the V60 I normally do around 20g coffee to 350g water.

Yeah I just think this.
1st shot is always in generally a bit worse unless you cba to warm everything up etc

I do about 15g coffee to 250ml ish so roughly on the 60:1 scale. It depends mostly on the beans you're using, 20g would be too much for 300ml for the stuff I use and I tend to favour a quicker brew.

My espresso flowed very fast today and I had almost double the amount of liquid I wanted - 28 second extraction. Same coffee produced quite different results a couple of days ago.
I think I ground slightly finer today as I was trying to increase the intensity - is this channelling happening? Should I grind a bit coarser? I don't love this bag so I'm just trying to get through it tbh.
I should say I'm using a normcore tamper and prep with a WDT tool

I have a 1Zpresso JX Pro and been very happy with it. I also only drink espresso and it works very well for that. 15g are ground in between 1 and 2 minutes I'd say

Has anyone tried Wonky Coffee? Seems like good value, if it's not all stale or terrible blends.

Would love to see how this turns out

OK, I've ordered 500g of light & medium roast beans

Light seems the safest bet. Good luck!

As I know your local to me, have tried any of the beans from Hoxtons?

What are the forum approved scales for weighing / timing output?
Currently I fill the (glass) cup up to the lower part of the handle with espresso and top off with oat milk.
MrsDeth prefers a different ratio.
I'd like to track what we do, preferences, etc. so we can consistently make each other their ideal beverage. -

For me, I just stick to the basic Rhinowares scale: https://www.coffeeomega.co.uk/product/rhinowares-coffee-brewing-scale-3kg-0-1g/
Think the Hario ones (https://www.hario.co.uk/collections/coffee-brew-scales/products/hario-v60-drip-coffee-scale-black) have had a few people complain that they've suffered due to liquid getting inside.

I have, I don't remember them being anything special but it was a while ago. Moon Roast are pretty good, they're over in New Alresford.

Yagua Barista used to be a favourite on here.
Assuming you've checked out 1zpresso options? I don't know much about the Feld but Kinu Phoenix will be in that price range too, might well be worth looking at as a pure espresso grinder.
