To be honest i have nexus hubs on two cargo bikes and both are still 100% with minimum maintenance. The 8spd is super common on ebikes and cargo bikes here

Old 8 speed Nexus is solid enough given some care. The 7 speed nexus is awful, they regularly explode or just reduce to 3 selectable gears within days/weeks of being new on a brand new regular hybrid. Maybe some folk get good ones, but personally would be glad to never have to warranty another one.
