  • Alright so I installed the Middleburns (RS8 X-types, taken off the 73mm BB Riv) which, unsurprisingly, sit quite wide on the Hog’s 68mm road BB, i.e. 2cms between the chainstays and crank arms. The cranks are designed for both so the NDS retainer ring needed winding in quite a bit to take up the slack.

    Two concerns:

The Bassi’s chainline is 45.5mm and the Middleburn duo spider’s chainline is supposedly 52mm in the outer ring. I’ve never really focussed much on chainlines so will 6.5mm make a real world difference? FWIW I’ll be using a 8sp 11–40t cassette.

Second, the outer chainring is really quite far out from the ST. The FD (M737) looks like it should have enough throw to perch over the big ring, but I’m waiting on a ST derailer shim before I can install it and be sure of that.

Other than the visual gap, the Q-factor is unlikely to be an issue as I’ve used these cranks merrily now for a couple of years.

  • Yup, though looks like I may need to space out the 68mm BB? I now realise the photos taken last night didn’t have the lockring flush with the BB (despite the DS crank bolt being tightened all the way).

This morning, I moved the DS assembly in by force of hand to take up the slack (the lock ring is now flush with the BB) but that’s meant the NDS assembly is now jutting right out and the lockring, even when wound all the way inwards, runs out of threads.

In the circumstance, is it normal to space out a 68mm BB to 73mm by 2x 2.5mm spacers, one on each side?
