  • Range Rover Evoque?

  • The ghia 1600 is mentioned which I believe is the same as the GT. Mexico might be different.

  • Mk6 what.

    Automatic adjustment or automatic handbrake.

  • Mk6 Golf.

It's a manual handbrake - as in a lever you lift.

I guess I want to check before I autoadjust again that it's not symptomatic of something else like the cable, and if I autoajust it's not going to make it worse.

  • ouch. Mine needed a new roof, which was approx the value of the car. Happy to go ahead with that, but then the fuel gauge stopped working and the idle control valve clogged up so it kept cutting it on roundabouts. I wanted to remove it and flush it with carb cleaner, but its blocked by the thermostat, which had rounded off bolts. That's when I threw in the towel.

  • Did you replace the pads and calliper yourself or did a garage do it? Why did you replace a calliper?

Long story short if a garage did the work I'd take it back to them to sort out.

If you did it yourself, is it possible you didn't wind the rear pistons back out fully? Were they easy to wind back? If not, they could be seized?

Otherwise you can try locking the rear pads by pulling up the handbrake several times to try and reset the pistons to the right position.

It could be a stretched cable or damaged housing, but I suspect not given the recent work to the rear brakes that you've described.

  • Oh this is lovely! I'm quite keen on one myself actually though unsure of which engine is the one to have and all of that...

  • 2.8 v6 auto is the boy.

    I only have the 2.0 but it’s me from a to b.

  • Cheers.

The pads and caliper were done 2m ago. The pads needed having and the NDS caliper was sezed, so the garage couldn't change the pads in that brake.

The noise has been for a few weeks.

I did a bit more reading and it sounds like it is a full autoadjust and manually intervening just prevents you from being able to use the auto adjust again.

So I took a chance and it seems to have sorted it. I wonder if I didn't do it properly last time. I've only done it once prior to that about this time last year in fact.

  • Randomly managed to time a visit to South Lodge in Sussex with this lot last weekend...

My son's jaws were rightfully on the floor.

  • Has anyone successfully negotiated up the price offered for a written off car by their insurer? Someone wrote my car off last week whilst it was parked on my road. Been offered £1400. That is probs fine really but I'm gonna be spending at least 2 replacing it

They said it's a regulated process / won't change / but I can appeal the process

  • Hope they didn't encounter any speedbumps!

  • Got an extra £250 for ours when I sent receipts of recent new tyres and suspension work done. Key is to fin a similar one on autotrader for more money.

  • It is fascinating. I spoke to the Huarya owner and he said it was arranged by what I thought was one of the teenage paps, sorry Youtube celebrities.

I guess they pre arranged a route with no hurdles etc

  • That's really good to know for future ref.

My folks had just replaced the clutch on their mini before it got written off.

  • Cheers. Found a comp which is a bit more

  • The majority of manual handbrakes with pads and discs, the piston needs to be wound back against the self adjusting clutch mechanism in the caliper, to reset them is usually pushing the brake pedal and operating the handbrake up to thirty times.

Obviously some manufacturers differ from others but that is the general rule.

  • EV charge points... My wife's looking to go electric and the company recommended to fit the charger does 3.5KW-£800, 7KW-£1000, 22KW-£1800.

I don't see the need for mega speed at home so just go with the middle option?

  • If front wheel drive helps to have a bit of weight in the back. But that could be a bit homeopathic.

Also be gentle no need to pull the hand brake like your trying to rip out the mechanism from the floor, gently press the brake pedal not using the full travel or stamping like an emergency be gentle.

  • I got an extra £500 when ours was written off. I supplied some examples of cars of a similar age, model etc etc. the insurance company will always low ball you on the basis that a lot of people will just accept the first officer.

  • It took about 2 weeks and ~6 phone calls to get a proper payment for our Mini when it got stolen. They kept on pricing it as a bog standard Mini Cooper and offering us about £3k when it was worth £5k+ being a John Cooper Limited Edition. Pretty much like this one (not ours) with the cream roof and bonnet lines, plus the flared wheel arches:

Eventually got someone on the phone who knew about Minis and understood the difference and offered us the expected value.

It was an awesome car to drive, but utterly dwarfed on the roads by today's cuntwagons.
