Not at all, it’s a really good place for the most part.
Alex the builder is always generous with young plants, produce and his wife is a prolific jam maker. He just swipes all the poop as him and the boys are industrious and a little selfish. He has a medieval style push plough and he does a lot of the old boys plots each spring.Guy opposite me is only annoying as his plot is a bit of an eyesore and he’s allowed to get away with it. I’ve seen him maybe 3-4 times in 3 years on the plot so he really doesn’t affect me.
Aside from that everyone is no more odd/mad than any other mixed grouping of randoms.
My partner is levelling/formalising her sunbathing area this spring which will probably raise eyebrows(someone last year complained about her attire on the plot but the council sided with us saying there’s no dress code).
It’s an allotment site, it wouldn’t be the same without a little drama and gossip.

Lol at complaining about attire. How British!
Good set for a TV show

Honestly I’m amazed there’s never been a twee sitcom about allotments, seems pretty obvious!
As for the sunbathing and ‘inappropriate attire’ we just laughed it off.
No-ones said anything in person and we have no idea who it would have been -

No pics but I popped up our plot today and did some impromptu weeding in an attempt to relieve some of the inactivity guilt. My poor running shoes will never look the same.

I’d be surprised if you didn’t suddenly get loads more friends!
Our allotment has its fair share of topless sun worshippers but it’s all male OAPs with bucket hats. -

Another productive day with it today.
Popped down to a village five minutes away to pick up some free horse manure thinking I'd get a few bags.
Turns out the paddock in question has a manure heap bigger than my allotment plot and about a metre deep, according to the lady I met there she'd never known anyone take any away in the 10 years she's had horses there. It's fair to say that it's pretty well rotted.
I've been told I can take as much as I want so I'l be back later in the week for another load.I also mentioned to a neighbour that I was going to try and get some wood chipping for the paths, turns out a local tree surgeon dumps lots there regularly and if there's any by the gate to help yourself. Turns out that six barrow loads doesn't appear to make any difference to the size of the heap!

Cross-post from chilli thread.
Misc superhot chilli seedlings available in e17 if anyone wants one? Keeping the couple of variegated ones but plenty of others available.

Damn, you’re on it! Had our furry seed potatoes dropped off this morning - I reckon it’s a dedicated weekend of digging.
Edit; Also just scored twenty old scaff planks for a fair price so will commit to a more permanent design of beds, forced my hand instead of all this procrastinating.

Are you guys allowed ponds on your plots?
-
• #4362
Yup. At least two in our plots.
-
• #4363
I think we’re allowed them but I’m not fussed for one personally.
Spent today digging in the manure I acquired last week. Spud bed is ready to go and put my first earlies out to chit in the potting shed.
Put some peas in, replanted my onion bed where some sets didn’t survive and generally had a bit of a tidy. -

Thanks, head of the AA said yes but I must check with the council first to get a steer on what’s acceptable, just in case I put a swimming pool in. I haven’t seen a single other pond but then again it’s mostly dedicated veggie growers.
Spent a few hours both days this weekend clearing last year’s pile of turf, weeds and brambles. Dragged a huge pile of crap out of the boundary hedge and dug out a well buried section of weed membrane. Massive blank canvas but the raised beds should transform it over night.

Can you freecycle a bath? That seems to be the most popular way of doing a pond round here

"Losing the Plot" 🤔

yep, putting a little one soon as have found several frogs in the overgrown section of my plot which are great for controlling slugs.

Ha Ha !
Its got to be written ... do it ! -
• #4371
You probably know this, but especially with something like a bath, you will need to build up stones/ramps at the sides to allow small mammals etc. to easily climb out.

Ponds used to be allowed as long as they had a rigid covering (safety grid) but they're now banned (rules were changed about 3 yrs ago) . How would you stop water going stagnant? a solar powered pump ?

How would you stop water going stagnant?
I think with the right planting it should be OK... In my garden we have a large water trough which is planted up and I was worried about algae but on the advice of a pond shop I submerged a small bundle of straw and the water's always been clear!
There’s not enough going on at my site
A good friend of mine was called as a witness for that fucked up court case about five years ago when two plot holders had a grudge and one murdered the other... North London somewhere.

Wow this guy and builder guy. Your allotment sounds like a mess of people. Annoying!
