Not
Modern myth. Even P&O who allegedly stamped tickets posh can find no evidence that they ever did this. More likely a slang term for young dandys at Victorian universities.

I’m not imparting some arcane secrets, it’s not some kind of obscure nautical knowledge. It’s standard stuff, it’s a broadly accepted convention

Adults who use the word hollibobs.
I think this might be a re-post.

Let me be the first to point out the nomenclature and colours (of navigation lights) applies to aircraft and spacecraft too.
Also, port/left/red are all shorter words than starboard/right/green.

Like it. I also used to remember which was the Arctic and which was the Antarctic by thinking about the size of the words sitting on top of each other - bigger word at the bottom > Antarctic must be the southern one.
Anyway, back to hate venting - being in a good mood I don't currently have anything to offer 🤷

Easily solved, it shouldn't go either way coz it should stay with me (said the Bishop of Norwich)

Reminds me of that 80's song with "Klingons on the starboard bow".... Did the Enterprise have a port and starboard bow?

You would deserve to be nuked from space for language abuse.

You have mentioned that one before, I recall making a mental note to drop it into conversation with you.
But then I forgot.

I'd like to add staycations to the things I hate. Sorry but I don't feel like I'm on holiday if I have to walk past a Greggs.
If I'm going to drive to the new forest to go on holiday, I may as well keep going, cross the Channel and be somewhere that feels culturally different. It's usually cheaper than staying on this god forsaken island anyway.

I disagree with your use of staycation, even if it is popular in the stupid media, and I disagree with you about holidays in the UK.
I've had some amazing trips in blighty. Cornwall and Northumberland have some of the best beaches in the world for example.

More than 95% of my holidays in my lifetime have been in the UK. In-laws live in Cornwall and we go for 2 weeks, sometimes 3, a year.
What skiing there is in the UK isn't great though.

I remembered it because the Arctic is the one with the bears, hence the name.

The same cnuts who say xx many sleeps till Christmas.
Fuck off.

Most of our holidays now are Scotland or Wales. Mull, Arran, the Highlands are great, especially if you like nature / wildlife.
