I think that only works with dry ice blasting
I suspect the main mechanism is saponification of oily contamination due to the alkaline solution.
Not the abrasive action of the soda (supposing the mix has left some undissolved)?
Oily contamination you would include whatever black substance the slow roasted goulash had solidified into?
