I do wonder how more XC orientated tyres would perform - issue is that it's often wet (tropical storms being a daily occurrence) and therefore a lot of the trails are built out of rocks, as soil washes away. This means you get a lot of rocky descents with accompanying short sharp rock climbs. I think the thiner casing and lack of grip would be, erm, exciting - and potentially lead to a lot of cursing.
