They can definitely take £900 through changing your code, but it depends on their knowing about all the income which gives rise to the £900 liability. The only income they really know about without your filing a return is PAYE employment income.
I’ve not been asked to do a self assessment this year. Previously I had so assumed I’d just missed reminders.
Ran through it and it calculated I owe ~£900, which it’d want paying today.
