I'm guessing it's because they've tried being nice and just get abuse anyway, so they may as well short cut straight to the abuse.
I've had good experiences with this kind of thing by saying something like "How long are you going to be? If it's a few minutes I'll wait, if it's longer I'll reverse back and go another way." You generally get a civil/honest response to that.
If you (not you specifically obviously) approach it with "Get out of the way. YoU aRe MaKiNg Me LaTe FoR wOrK!!!!one!!" you're going to get the FO/wanker response, and they WILL take longer to finish the delivery and get moving again.
