• I'm planning a gravel trip to the Sierra Nevada in May and am starting to think about gearing and could do with some advice.

My current setup is GRX 812, so 1x, running 42t front and 11-42t at the back. I want to go smaller, ideally 38t front and 11-46t at the back. Is that possible or beyond what the RD can handle? If so, what are my (cheapest) options?

  • (cheapest) options?

    Surely going 2x.

If you have a GRX 800 crankset all you'd need is 46/30 chainrings and a FD (any shimano 11s would work). Assume levers are GRX, so should be already 2x, just need the cable. That way your lower gear would be 30x42, and don't have to change cassette.

  • Unfortunately my levers are 1x, so I'd have to buy a replacement left hand STI as well so it gets expensive
