thanks Ed. I've got a 5800 rear mech currently though. looks like that's a 7000 mech in the photo?
maybe I'll upgrade to r7000, or would it be better to go for a grx or xt mech with an 11-40 cassette? -

GRX means a clutch if that's useful, XT won't be compatible.

Please let me know if you have any luck finding out. We have had a Diverge donated to us with a faulty FS headset and need to repair/replace it in order to sell it

The solution found in the video seems like the best option for rigidifying the forks.
Otherwise it appears a new suspension unit needs to be ordered. -

Have you got a Diverge now?

So after all that gear chat which I skimmed over... is there something wrong with 42t x 11-42t that I'm missing?
-
• #29584
No.

Excellent news. Cassettes are expensive.

Yes, 1x is stupid.

FDsDerailleurs are stupid. -

One to one gear ratios are stupid

Yeah, much better to have lower options.

If you can, get a GRX derailleur, or long cage 105 R7000.
I can’t comment on 5800 as haven’t made upgrades on those for quite some time, the R7000/GRX design allow you to get away with it.

I’ve made a GRX work work 11-42 x 50/34, but I’m a fucking wiz mechanic

I've been running 46/36 Ultegra and RX800 with a 9-42 cassette and it seems to work fine. Functions on big/big or small/small (not that if want to in reality).

I'm planning a gravel trip to the Sierra Nevada in May and am starting to think about gearing and could do with some advice.
My current setup is GRX 812, so 1x, running 42t front and 11-42t at the back. I want to go smaller, ideally 38t front and 11-46t at the back. Is that possible or beyond what the RD can handle? If so, what are my (cheapest) options?
Mezcals. They work surprisingly well in mud, ok on tarmac and perfect for loaded gravel touring.
