  • They're the same mount as the alu ones.

  • Is that the 70 or 110 rise ones you’ve got there?

  • Found the email. Bought from Sigma Sport. 70mm

  • How much attention are we paying to weight of bike for multi day races?

  • If you're not planning to come top 3, I'd say 'nearly none'. And even then...

  • Article by Chris on how little weight matters in an ultra https://ridefar.info/bike/cycling-speed/weight/

  • I'd never admit to such a thing.

  • Read that last night actually, it soothed the very distant nagging at the back of my mind.

  • There is a tendency to take more stuff as you get more risk averse with age and experience so it's good to manage that and avoid the weight creeping up too much.
But I think bulk, number of items that need to be handled and packing efficiency are more important than weight. Chris's article quantifies that well - he always takes loads of stuff and manages to do OK!

  • I'm my experience, 5 minutes less time spent feeling sorry for yourself outside a boulanger is always going to get you much further up the road than going full ruthless weight weenie on everything you're carrying.

At the same time you don't want to be super aware you're carrying tons of pointless stuff over every last hill. I rode alongside someone on TPR who'd spent an hour in a post office shipping unused kit home to himself, I've seen people go on round the world trips with less

  • I've used my current set up on a couple of biggish events, opting for compliance, a large cassette and bombish proof over full carbon lightness and I rode it to Greece and back with 17kg of luggage which for a trip of that distance I felt was pretty svelte.

I find if I go out and ride that bike like I do my out and out road bike it empties me out pretty quick.

There was always a nagging about how it must be easier to hold a higher average speed (If I could make it as comfortable as possible) but I now accept its a completely different thing.

  • If you can reduce weight without compromising anything else, other than your wallet, it's worth doing. Just optimising other stuff is likely to give better returns on effort.

  • hippy is ROFL

  • I'm due to lose around 7kg myself, you're not alone.

  • Anyone have experience of events organised by ultrabikefrance? Was looking for something to do after summer and they've got a 500km/11000m event (and a couple of smaller routes)

  • Road event of the Gran Guanche well under way: https://dotwatcher.cc/race/granguanche-audax-road-2024

Love the Canaries but never cycled on any of them. 700k of "gravel" in March would be hot and killer. I can't do it but Hippy should.

  • I watched a video of this not more than a couple of days ago and it did pique my interest. I'm kinda over racing these days but I do like the idea of this route and format. Was busy with work stuff this year but perhaps something for next year. I still need to go back and finish AMR...

Oh, this one is the road version. I remember now, they do each format at a different time of year. I think I'd be looking to do the gravel or MTB version and maybe as a tour rather than during the event time(s).

  • It's an audax anyway, not a race!

  • That sounds like a much better idea, doing the gravelly bits in early/mid January would be a good time.

  • Dot Watcher lists a Male and Female "winner" so I'm not sure how audax the audax part is.

  • Aren't the canaries pretty stable temperature year 'round?

I like the heat anyway. I've been to Tenerife in Jan before and there's been ice on Mount Teide

  • "It’s a self-supported, single-stage, fixed-route ride and follows the classic rules and principles of ultra-cycling events, but in the spirit of Audax, participants are here allowed to ride in a group and draft each other. This will encourage participants to plan stages and create a pelotón between ferries connections"

    Dotwatcher are a bit meh.

Tbh it should be on there, it's not a race and doesn't follow the rules of ultra cycling.

To be clear, it's a cool concept. But it's not an ultra cycling race. It's a fun event or audax.
