But that’s the problem. There’s always Allez Man, riding on the absolute limit and sacrificing any control or awareness in doing so. I don’t want him anywhere near me, either in front or behind.

Which is entirely valid but I'd say the onus is on you to slow down / speed up to position yourself away from such riders. My initial point was that if you overtake someone I don't feel you can have any complaints if they then try and sit on your wheel.

Oh I agree. This is what I do. Generally just ease off, if someone in rugby socks sees me as a pacemaker!
