There is some debate as to if plastic is appropriate for high temperature food related stuff. See the new Aeropress being proudly BPA free whilst possibly using other plastics that have similar or worse properties .

To be fair I've always brewed my Aeropresses into a glass (from Keepcups to standard Ikea glasses) and not suffered any rapid unplanned disassemblies of any glasses yet!
But yeah, I'd rather stick with plastic assuming it's safe.

Nothing on tonight. I know, I’ll just* pop the top off my Gaggia and replace that leaky steam wand.

However, 2 hours later, no leaks and a perfect shot first time. I can’t relax now though, something might go wrong!

Honestly it’s so weird, this was a one product business and that was one of the reasons Andrew Wilkinson said he loved it. Since acquiring they just keep making more and more models. Most of which make little sense

Do think the travel and XL ones do make sense tho

Yeah it’s getting a bit out of hand now. Will just keep buying new plunger seals for mine until… forever? Have no need to buy a new one at all.

anyone got a surplus hand grinder? I bought a Timemore from aliexpress as a present for my daughter, but it did not arrive despite their system saying it did. They insist I send a photo proving its non-delivery. ... It is for V60 and aeropress, but possible espresso capability is nice but not essential.

Isn't that where you send them a sarcastic picture of an empty space?

I have a Kyocera I’d be willing to sell- similar quality bracket to porlex I think… £15?

I sent a meme from on here where Eeyore tells Pooh to fuck off. That will learn them.

that is a kind offer but think I will wait to see if someone has a Timemore which I bought, or an 1 espresso or similar.

No problem!

Which one did you get? How much was it?

I was supposed to get the latest C2 and it was c£35. There was talk here of the travel Q air 1 espresso but by the time I decided it was out of stock.

I will probably plug it a few more times but the NextLevel Pulsar is the best upgrade to the Clever i could have made. It does the same 1 cup, water first recipe that the clever is great for but can also do 600+ ml brews with ease. Im very very happy with mine

Looks great for sure. But more plastic sadly.

Just had my brother coach me through using a mokka pot, to create the worst cup of coffee in memory. Got to love it.
He got my hopes up when he told me to put an aeropress filter in, but then ran it at really low heat (well, he took it off the hob and took over) and had it come through painfully slow - resulting in the most putrid undrinkable tar. Thanks mate, ever thought about being a barista?I’m mostly just joshing, but him taking control of the coffee I was making myself is always going to be a bit of an irritation!

That sounds like the hoffmann technique for the mokka pot, I've had great results using it tbf.
Maybe the grind was wrong? Needs to be fairly fine, not espresso fine but finer than a v60.

we need to upgrade the plastic tamper that came with our machine. my partner wants a traditional motta style tamper, but I'm convinced by a spring loaded normcore - who's right?
-
• #25598
Similar, but with the filter paper, you get enough resistance that you’re basically boiling the coffee grounds.
I thought the method was get to put boiling water in the bottom, to aid the water quickly getting to boiling when on the hob, then massively reducing heat once the coffee comes through, to minimise the amount of time that the grounds have boiling water going through them/regulating it so that the brew temp isn’t so high that you’re dissolving loads of coffee, and making it bitter as fuck.

I mean, you can get a dirt cheap normal metal tamper to appease her. The normcore will be better. Especially as it’ll always tamp perfectly level.

The hoffmann method has the paper, just makes the brew cleaner and slightly increases extraction.
But yeah, your description is pretty much what it is, just sounded like what your brother did in your first post?
Because there’s data emerging about nasty shit from the plastics leeching out and into the water, even when BPA free. And considering that the information about micro plastic consumption from using plastics seems to be moving in one direction (towards it being bad), I’m keen to eradicate them where I can.
And if you can’t press an aeropress carefully, that’s your problem. They’re designed to be pressed gently and not forcefully anyway.
