  • Tbh I wasn't initially taken by the idea as I thought it wouldn't have the tyre clearance, plus I was trying not to go back to alu - the death of the mason is essentially because its alu and can't be bent back / fixed. So had been thinking steel would be more multipurpose, but maybe that's looking at this wrong and I should reconsider....

  • isen workshop would have been an option :)
that mason Ti is probably ticks all boxes, but not economical ( plus their forks are pretty unremarkable on a bike of this price) .
If i needed a supercommuter/winter trainer type frame, not sure what' i'd do, maybe, i'd look at he best steel possible ? ( isen used 853 steel for instance ).

  • I could use my Talbot I guess, it does technically tick the boxes! But is set up to be a bit more fancy than a winter bike...

I think that's the way I was instinctively leaning though - nice steel with enough braze ons / internal routing etc to do everything I want.

  • Maybe a BlackHeart? https://blackheartbikeco.com

    That's what I'll be getting next. :-)

  • Crazy cheap

  • There's absolutely no way I'd put a beautiful bike like the above through the grime of winter. That's what carbon fibre's for!

  • Finally finished this winter's build.
Based on Pretorius Ti I got from @andyp
Pretty sharp ride as expected - certainly by ti standards.
Managed with all used parts I had on hand except rear wheel build, hydro hoses and a new saddle - so economical too. Careful fettling has allowed in 32mm Hutchinson Sector tubeless (my favourite tubeless for fitting and toughness). Just waiting on replacement for faulty rear light

  • That's great to see, glad you're enjoying it. I'm impressed you got 32 mm tyres in there with guards, you must be a mudguard fettling ninja.

  • Does this qualify?

  • More than qualifies. Very nice

  • Excellent!

  • First ride of this Joe Waugh 531c in "nice winter" mode. It did have Campagnolo Xenon and a rack but was getting trashed on the salty commute, so that all got swapped onto a Kona Honky Tonk and this got a promotion. Pieced together a 9000 groupset - normally a Campagnolo fan but really like the look. Would benefit from nice handmade shallow wheels but had these Fulcrums spare so on they went!

  • Looks great! What’s tyre clearance like under the guards?

  • Tyres are 25s as that's what I had, so Blumels guards sized to match and manage to wrap them pretty tight. The frame and fork spacing is generous so you'd get 28s perhaps 30s in if you were more motivated for plushness.

  • Ira Ryan seem to be all over my instagram at the moment, I’m not complaining…

  • Most acceptable and no discs too - much winning.

  • Mates Bike ready for a wet ride 100 Essex.

  • Didn’t someone in here have some made aethos with mudguards?

    How?

  • Is it thru axles that have threaded bits for mudguards?

  • QRs through the hollow thru axles iirc. There was an s-works something that had tapped the thru axles as well.
