  • Were the big boys mean to you? Bless.

  • You were racist and called out for it.

  • The law on trespass has changed to.

Having had a bit of experience of dealing with the traveller (the kind that trespass on to land, and the kind that never leave temporary traveller areas) is is unkind to share my experiences?

While I have lived the bus life with crusties…? Is that the right term? That was a very different experience.

Interesting there was no comment on the arson idea..

  • He is also from a well known [queer|jewish|philatelic|traveller] community

Before we lynch bq, we should decide which of these exhibits prejudice and which is just calling attention to a material consideration in the case at hand. If it's the former in all cases, then reserve your ire for the OP.

  • I wasn't but you assumed I was, because that's the way you think.

  • What I posted also "could probably be read negatively, but don't have to be".

  • Personally, given the community he is part of I would just sell him the land and buy another piece with the money. Travellers aren't universally renowned for respecting property boundaries or ownership.

    Happy to delete

  • someone posted somewhere about some narrow nitto bars where the 'on the hoods' width was much narrower than the nominal measurement. What are these?

  • So why was he attacked while the OP wasn't? Could it be that the OP's post was too long for the eager lynch mob members to read? IME they have a habit of throwing around their filthy accusations without troubling to read the context of what has apparently upset them. But if they outnumber their victim they always get away it.

  • Are you new here ;)

  • Dunno, maybe cos OP has a first hand account and is trying to make it work.

Other comment came across as "give up because all travellers..blah blah"

  • @gbj_tester
Happy to amend my OP if anyone genuinely feels like I have shown prejudice/racism. I think the fact that I’ve been open in saying that he is a member of the travelling community and in my experience people within this community have an above average understanding and awareness of regulations around land possession and issues around this feels ok and is a key contributor to my concerns; I mean it kind of makes sense doesn’t it? Travellers and historically nomadic communities being more aware of one of the very pillars that their community is built upon? Wasn’t my intention to be prejudicial, isn’t in my eyes overtly or discreetly prejudicial but although I try and consider it, I can’t always be 100% aware of how everything I say might be received/interpreted. It’s also easy for people to try and find a stick to beat people even if there is no reason to and a very conscious choice is made to interpret something someone has written in a particular way because it suits, I don’t know, an agenda perhaps or just the way they’re feeling at the time (not snide or pointed , just a general point). Anyway, long and short, I’ll willingly (and without too much sulking) edit my post if anyone feels that it was (not very possibly could have been!!) prejudiced, bigoted or racist

  • He has hardly attacked, just called out. OP was asking some advice about land laws etc. in relation to someone using the land, said person was identified as part of a local traveller community, this may or may not have been relevant, but either way there wasn't anything negative said about the guy and OP had mentioned talking with him seemingly amicably so no reason to think otherwise.

  • He has hardly attacked, just called out.

Weasel words. Calling someone out for racism IS an attack! And it becomes a very vicious, upsetting attack when other lynch mob members instantly pile in, even though they haven't read the context or understood the issue. For lynch mob members, speed of attack is much more important than thinking it through or knowing what you're talking about.

  • This is it (and put more succinctly than I could have). I actually want to help him adjust to it for both our benefits and my wife wants to support him to find a better home for his horses - this will benefit us admittedly. I felt it was appropriate to say he was from a travelling community for the reasons I stated and also acknowledge that that has increased my anxiety about the issues. It’s a me problem, not a him problem and I need to ensure I’m doing what I can to be protected against an adverse possession claim and that by, either by not taking actions or by acting in a way that mitigates against one, I’m protecting myself and my land.

  • :popcorn.gif:

  • innit - that’s not to be flippant regarding people’s right to be offended at what they see as racism

  • "in my experience, many within that community have a 'greater than typical' understanding of issues relating to land possession etc" which was clearly a veiled reference to trespassing and other antisocial land occupation.

That wasn’t veiled @bq, it was explicit (or it was meant to be). That said, it wasn’t related to his being a traveller; the specific reference to which I have explained and attempted to rationalise. No issue if eventually people are encouraged or cajoled to the point of calling me out (sounds snide so accept someone may me immediately offended of their own volition) and if/when they do, regardless of the fact I vehemently deny any intention to be racist and that what I wrote absolutely wasn’t racist, I’ll read it again and consider others’ feelings and consider the language I use, the way it might be received and the semantics and try and do better in the future. That’s it

  • May I also say that having barely been on here over the last couple of years, it is genuinely a pleasure to be back and mix (albeit in the meta verse) with you all - even those I may strongly disagree with and vice-versa

  • Yeah, but more importantly

someone posted somewhere about some narrow nitto bars where the 'on the hoods' width was much narrower (like 35cm) than the nominal measurement. What are these?

  • I don't think anyone on here has called you racist, neither should they. Some of my advice could possibly be seen as racist, but in truth could be applied equally to any member of a larger community. FWIW a Romany has worked with me for the last 18 years, because nobody else would give her a chance.

There was a blatantly racist statement made, it was attacked. The pile-on is rarely a pretty thing to watch as the slightest hint of racism is leapt upon even when it isn't really there. A classic example is the conflation of Israeli with Jewish, which is nonsense.

  • Appreciate that- I think it’s good that people are sensitive to such issues but also there’s a risk that people look for things that aren’t there and try and find a way to make it fit.
    All the best

  • Calling someone out for racism IS an attack!

    Oookaaay?

And it becomes a very vicious, upsetting attack when other lynch mob members instantly pile in

There were a few comments and a request to edit, which was done. Now go away and think about your use of the term "lynch mob" whilst I notch up my hand wringing.

  • whilst I notch up my hand wringing.

    Pics or it didn't happen
