As Phil said, doing a proper 5km effort will be much more helpful for calculating where your zones are.
There are lots of idiosyncrasies with zones, and zone training. The biggest one IMO, is that the benefits of doing z1/z2 might be negligible if you’re not doing many miles anyway. We chatted about this at the club, and my coach definitely supported the notion that if you’re not doing many miles a week, the 90/10 training ratio of low effort to high intensity, might not actually be that optimal.
Yes doing lots of miles and base building is great if you’re still left with enough miles to do some good utilisation training (and get the benefit), but with low mileage overall, z1/2 might not be worth it. -

My Altra Timp 2s have given up the ghost
Probably my second favourite trail shoes after the Brooks Pure Grit.
Looking at Brooks Caldera 6.
Should I be considering anything else? Have Altra really gone downhill? I like the toebox and the low drop

I like my sportiva akasha for a wide long distance runner

They look decent, but the giant mega sole of the caldera look good for all the swamp I run on.
It’s going to be a change from minimal (ish) drop to high heels.

New inov8 Mudtalon in the wide fit?
Haven’t had great experiences with inov8 I raced in mud claws a few times and came away with bruised feet that matched the tread. They are fine on really soft ground, but if it’s mixed road or just lots of big rocks, they don’t give much protection…maybe I’m delicate.

Haha, I’m in the same boat about getting ears done. Midlife crisis dads go running. MCDGR - not quite as catchy as MGOOF, must try harder.

That’s pretty standard tbf - definitely for racing and soft underfoot. They’re minimal in cushioning for sure. I wince on any tarmac .
I got these in the sale for harder packed trails, happy so far, but used to very minimal shoes, so these seem reasonably cushioned to me.

It was my fault for choosing the wrong shoes. I was running the Bath hilly half. I had top twentied it the year before and was in better shape, but the ground was harder this time and the mud claws were not the right shoe and beat me up.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a jacket, erring on the side of waterproof, that's sufficiently visible and reflective for a club night on the road? Budget of up to £200ish.
Or am I better getting something inherently dark (e.g. Goretex dark-only colours) and supplementing it with something bright/shiny?

Not sure about hi vis jackets, but surely you are only going to get a fairly narrow window when it is cold enough to club run with a jacket at night???
I've got one of these and it is very comfortable and visible.https://lightupu.com/collections/running/products/led-spider-vest

Lately, I feel like it would get a lot of use. I've inadvertently gone up a size, otherwise I'd have worn my existing Gore jacket. I'm not always running with 'my' group, so I feel the cold more on the slower runs.
That LED spider looks interesting! Does it just hook over the shoulders, or connect under the arms as well?

Yes it goes under the arms too, you put it on like you would a backpack and it clips together at the front just over your breast plate.

So I did a "threshold" run today. All managed by Garmin based on my HR. 10mins of warmup at around 141bpm (8min/km), 15mins of threshold at around 167 bpm (5:50min/km) then jog home.
Running at 5:50 felt like my conversational pace in reality so something is going on there. Good chance my max HR is incorrect so I'll do a hard 5km with a monitor at some point.
What is undeniable tho is that forcing myself to run at 8min/km has made my concentrate on my form and really helped my lower leg niggles and that has made me happy.

I'm trying to decipher MGOOF, which may confirm middle ageness.
Daughter suggesting I shouldn't get eyebrow pierced, which I will rebel against obvs as that's the best way to role model for her teenage years, right?
I ran today too (to keep this relevant).
Good luck with the ears 🪡
