SOLD: Bob Jackson 753 51/53cm small F/F £150

  • Have just swapped out to a bike with more clearance and mounting points for guards and racks, so looking to shift my previous bike to recoup some of the cost. Bought the frame off the forum at a pretty decent £185 and looking to pass it on for close to that. Comes with Campag Athena headset and Controltech 27mm alu seatpost (given that you seldom see these diameters hanging around). ST is 51cm and TT is 53cm; I'm 5'7 with short arms and it fits me perfectly, though loads of seatpost left so could probably go a few inches taller. Dropouts are Campag.

Have run it as a fixed conversion as a daily commuter (albeit it has always lived and been locked up indoors, so never outside more than a few hours at a stretch) with the following parts which I can let go with the bike as a bundle for 80, or would be happy to sell separately: Espresso front wheel, rigida flyer on sturmey archer rear wheel with 18t sturmey archer freewheel pretty much new, 3TTT quill stem and morphe handlebars, Miche xPress 48T chainset (mismatched Shimano 105 NDS arm), UN55 BB, SRAM calliper brakes, please let me know if the prices seem silly and will adjust accordingly. If you buy the rolling chassis you'll need a saddle, levers, brake cables and pedals (there is still a KMC Z1 chain attached which has done about 6 months of riding, could also provide saddle and pedals if required). And a lockring if you want to ride fixed.

    The good:
Its a BJ Reynolds 753 - you don't see this steel anymore and Bob Jackson were one of the few who could work with 753, so grab a piece of framebuilding history! Rides like a dream - stiff, accelerates well, very zippy - just after two years with it I have to admit it's not my style of riding.

    The bad:
It needed repainting when I got it, I have not repainted it. Paintwork is pretty scratched, though frame is structurally sound and there are no dents (I'd like to think this is the reason why it's never been stolen despite being locked up to lampposts around London fairly regularly.)
Fork steerer column has been replaced by Winston Vaz after a pothole in Paris - stayed on the bike but steerer threads were knackered. Means that the fork was resprayed by Mario (matches bike close enough) and lacks the 753 shield decal (couldn't be bothered with postage costs from Reynolds but can be had for <10, postage included)
Only clearance for 23mm in front and 28mm in the rear (I was running 25 rear with SKS raceblade pros). Was clearly a race bike so no mounting racks for guards or racks.
BB threads have apparently at some point been scored; had the threads cleaned and re-tapped by a decent LBS last month and have not had a problem with the BB since (or even before then).

Proper photos to follow after I've had some time to clean the bike up, but a recent one is attached for illustration.

  • Price drop - 170 for the frame and 250 for the lot.

  • 160 for frame, 240 to include front/rear wheel + freewheel, stem, bars, brake callipers, crankset and chain (or 230 minus brakes). Have a cheap saddle, pedals and bartape lying around so just add levers and cables..

  • Picture of BB threads if helpful - BB is still entirely functional

  • Will the rear fit a 28 with race blades?

  • Have tried before with Marathon Plus and raceblade pros and couldn’t get it to work - see clearance with 25 on at the moment. Might work with raceblade longs?

Cranks have been sold and brakes undibsed so now the rolling chassis will be front beater wheel, 130mm spaced rear wheel + freewheel, stem, bars, brake callipers, UN55BB for 220.

Also don't mind the brakepads; I almost never brake on the rear and just swapped the front and rear pads around after the front wore down..

  • Dropped - 155 frame, 210 chassis. Am I out on pricing (ratty paintwork notwithstanding it's still a 753 BJ) or is no one keen on retro frames/conversion SS bikes?

  • Where are you located ?

  • Have PMed - central-ish SE London!

  • 150 for frame and 200 for rolling chassis.

  • Frame now sold; parts still available in my other thread.
