That just never makes sense to me, those are designed to be mounted horizontal and that's when they work best.
The secula comes in a version that can be mounted this way neatly, secuzed also, the tiny one too. -
• #4728
Secuzed is a step up from secula.
The mü is great, but really small. I wouldn't recommend it for a bike that's used on unlit country lanes fir example. -

Shimano has a switch sw-nx30
Originally it was for front light, but you could as well use it for back-light.
Has on-off setting but also auto setting that is ambient light activated. -

What functions differently when it's vertical? It's just a light, and being a rear not a front it's not even directional?

So I think that unlit country lanes are what the Mu is for as it's a strong directional point light to light at distance, its for proper road riding. What it isn't so good at is wide and side light which is more important for city use, so yeah secuzed is ace for that.

Those lights have a directional lens that creates a wide beam horizontally but very narrow vertically. If you mount it vertically than it'll appear much dimmer when viewed by someone who's not exactly behind you.

Ah you probably have a point.
Will check if I ever ride through the night with a group. -

This.

I can see they discuss that effect in the marketing materials. In reality when you look at it I don't think it is at all noticeable

Is that the B&M or the Son? I am sure mine (B&M) is nothing like so pronounced
-
• #4738
This isn't unusual, it's not marketing, it's about focussing the lumens where they're needed. I think most cycle lights do this as they're limited by power and weight.
-
• #4739
B&M.
-
• #4740
Maybe I'm being an idiot
I still don't think it makes much difference when you're looking at the light (on mine anyway)
The marketing does claim it is special and unusual...

I am now leaning towards Secula, saw a video of Secuzed and it doesn't look like it generates a lot of light while Secula seems to be much brighter. Do you have any experience with both?
-
• #4742
Can't find it available anywhere, but that is generally a good idea.
I just got another idea, as rear light is connected to the front one, can I just disconnect the cable between them when I don't need it? -
• #4743
Only ever had secula, those are definitely great. But I doubt b&m would make a product worse.
The cables are kinda fiddly and those little plugs not the sturdiest. You also want them to be tight as.
Just steal a sock from your kid and put it on the light maybe? -
• #4744
Or put a connection in the cable, the part where you plug into the lights is the weak point on b&m, as said above.

Anyone in the market for a Supernova E3 Pro 2 front and rear? I've got a mate coming over here from the UK in a week or two and he can take it back if anyone wants one.
-
• #4746
yes it is discontinued. It was from a time of the first hub dynamo and halogen lamp that had no switch as the bottle dynamo was the switch originally! But widely available and a rather neat solution.
here for GBP10 shipped (or GBP8 without the connector that you don't need)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175742699395?hash=item28eb14c783:g:4R0AAOSwLmRj73eh
disconnecting is not really an option, connector won't hold after a week!

Anyone have a SON rack mounted rear light that they would want to sell, or ideally trade for my seatpost mounted one?
I have this:

I want this (or the orange anodised):

I also have a Supernova rear light that I could trade too actually:

Potentially, I've a silver one I've not used.
Or I've two broken ones you could have. Both the standby doesn't work and one seems to have reduced output. Took me three goes to realise you can't wire them directly as they have no voltage protection.

I'd be interested in buying the seatpost mount one if you wanted to sell instead of trade
-

Thanks, will PM
Happy to sell the seatpost one to you @WhitleyJay too, will drop you a message
