  • We inherited a wooden L shaped kitchen bench and table. We really like it, it's one of the few things staying in the house after we finish refurbishing

  • Cause you can't get enough of brutalist architecture? Or is it one of those live-in jobs?

  • Tbf I only live opposite one, although I do very much like the architecture of the main building, I have it ear marked for a last stand when society collapses.

  • Ha! I thought you were joking.

My OH and I always used to play a game when we were travelling where we'd assess and rate locations for their appropriateness in a zombie apocalypse.

  • Define comfy I guess but with chairs a slight slope on the backrest and seat is more forgiving and helps your butt not slide forward . If you were going for a bare bones minimal ply flat bench type affair id reckon to make it plenty deep so you can comfortably lean back against the wall.

  • Yes! Same! This water treatment plant is good as it is double fenced, on stilts (classic mid century bantz) and surrounded by water.
I always felt some of the flats in Hackney Wick would be good too with the canal as a moat and then being gated, although that was back in 2010 when the population density there was way lower.

  • Thanks for thoughts on banquette seating. Will need to think carefully about fabric/cushions. Potential for them to get wrecked by kids dropping food etc.

  • FWIW we didn't have cushions for ages and it was fine, then bought one of Etsy that isn't quite the right size and my wife hates.

Another example of built in seating.

  • Shoe storage....

My hallway is a mess , there are shoes everywhere. I need some shoe storage to keep it tidy. I want doors or drawers to keep it neat looking.

Looking at something that fits into the recess between the step and the boxed in pipework by the front door, 52cm wide.

I've priced up a 200 x 37 x 40 plykea unit , but its spendy, especially when fitting is added on top . Have also priced up a tylko unit, cheaper but is a free standing unit, so wont look as nice.

Any other options I should be looking at, or any other custom fronts firms ? I've assumed that a full custom unit will be more expensive still

  • Can anyone recommend a company that serves North London that refurbs and fits fireplaces?

  • screw a few skateboards to the wall and use them as shoe shelves? ;)

  • My son would certainly love that. Given the current weather, a temporary shelf is pretty much the only use for his board right now ;)

  • Suppose I could also get the area boxed in, with ply or oak veneer sheets and inset a unit between them. Might look neater than something free standing

  • Shoes take up a silly amount of space. We have 3 of the John Lewis ANYDAY shoe cabinets and at 50cm wide they only just take 2 pairs of adult width shoes side by side per tier.

I liked the idea of the wooden slat shoe holders that someone on here used to make. At least for the majority of our sports shoes (football, running, tennis, cricket, etc) that don't need to be treated as kindly as others.

We've got an outer hall that we share with our upstairs neighbours that has a bit of dead space where the staircase used to go down to the downstairs floor (it's a house cut up into flats). That'd make a great bit of storage space that we'd happily share with upstairs but just don't have the tuits right now.

  • It's the doors and the step that make this a less simple job.

What's the exact height of the space?

    That JL things dimensions are H106 x W50 x D15cm.

If you have 212cm from the step to the ceiling, then you could mount two to the wall on top of each other (and if really keen filler the join, and repaint to match your walls). Although as the powder coated steel idk if its worth it.

  • Absolutely - they seem to take up infinite space ... the hall is thin and awkward too, so not much space to add storage .

If like the elfa shoe racks, they make good use of space and can store many shoes in a small area . I'd want them boxed in though , which would inflate cost massively

  • height is 2m 30. Very low ceiling on the ground floor, would fit 2 of the JL units though i dont think they would fit all the shoes!

  • West London any good for you? Firecraft in Ealing has worked on ours and did what they said they would do with minimum fuss.

  • Thanks Howard but I’m Enfield way

  • Ah, it was moocher who was doing the shoe racks here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/322340/

  • I've never used them but I know a couple of people who said these were good
    https://thebetterhearth.com/installations/

Or is for actual use or decorative? If decorative then they aren't too tricky to fit

  • Bit late to the party but a few random references here I pulled together when looking at a kitchen bench.

  • i may have posted this before on this thread - i bought a locker for shoes. maybe a bit industrial but it fits in well with our decor.
you can get fancy coloured ones as well.

  • Had seen some colourful ones that look quite good , though not sure it'd fit in with the rest of the house

  • Having looked at some real life photos of tylko stuff it's out of contention . Big gaps and poor tolerances in some pics that are unacceptable for the price . Looks fine in others, but makes it feel like it'd be a bit of a lottery
